Pierre Barres had his Cub out In front, ridlng like his leathers were on fire, with Bill Schatter after him on an Ossa like he was goIng to put the fire out. In the 250 Novice class, Ron Smalley riding his Greeves held first wire to wire. Jerry Ellis on a Bultaco was In hot pursuit of Smalley. but the real race was r Partlnc II luch Iweet sorrow but those shorts br1chtened up the scene. was wedged into Chuck Lantz's 1384 still uprightl Lantz pulled It about thirty feet down the track before he could get stopped. All this caused a restart. When the white flag was dropped, Bob Estes on his BSA grabbed the lead with Dave Brant on his Triumph chasIng him and S. Pen riding Husky third. Everybody then held these positions to the fln1sh. As usual the combined Open Amateur and Expert class was the fastest. Jim Denny was back again on a beaut1tul Triumph Metisse. Jim held down first for three laps unt1I he got a Uttle wide and Triumph mounted Bob Perry sliPped under him. At the starting Une in the 200cc MaIn, some of the riders were razzing a rather for third place between ClUt Jones Bultaco mounted and Rick Chambers Yamaha mounted. Just before the 250 Amateur MaIn, the water truck got carried away and wet the course too mUCh. About a dozen pickuPs and cars made five laps to dry it out, but the course still had about a halt Inch of sOUP on it. This was exciting. In fact, a consistent winner In this class, Windy Foreman riding his Yamaha, sUd down three times In seven laps before he hung it UP. Leader for the first five laps was Jim Denny on a Bultaco unt1I the mud got to him and more conservative Jim Haimes took over on a Husky. Denny managed to pick it up right behind Yamaha man, George Schatter, who had moved Into second place. 250 Expert Jim Saltone grabbed the lead at the start, and by the illth lap was far enough ahead of the second place man that he was pulling wheel- stands down the straightaways. Jack Pine (Hon) held down the lead for the first four laps in the 375 Novice Main, wh1le being constantly plagued by Ed Parker on his Husky. Parker got around Pine in the fifth lap and started stretching his lead. Bill Krejei riding a Montesa was after Pine and was galnlng on him unW he ran out of time when the fWsh flag fell. Jim Saltone on his Matco was back again In the combined 375 Amateur and Expert event. By the end of lap two, Jim had gotten around Don Ivan, Bultaco mounted. Ivan held down second unW the next to last lap when Bob Bowen (Husky) got by and moved into second. Ron Grandstaff came ott the Une like gangbusters on his Hodaka in the lOOcc Matn, only to be passed In the back switchback by NeU MacDonnald (M.B.). Norman Denny, Hodaka mounted, was pushing Grandstaff really hard until the sixth lap when he fell, and two hometowners, Don Rudd (Honda) and Steve Woerner (Bultaco) got by him. The next group of hardy Individuals were the combined 125cc and 175cc Novtees with the 175's handicapped. The 125's didn't let tile 175's bother them too much, as the first five places went to 125's. Ron Sldnner riding Yamaha took over first on the second lap, with John Schmidt, also Yamaha, right on his rear wheel. Hayward's The Place When It Gets Dar' By Dale W. The 650 Novice MaIn got oft to a bad start when four riders went down In the first turn, with two of them hittlng the fence. Three of the bikes made it back to the starting Une up, and the race was restarted without a mishap. Bryan Long took command and went on to win it easily. The drop of the nag In the 500 Expert class saw Jerry Bower's BSA lead the boys out of the first turn. Clift Aksland followed In second with Bruce Teixeira in third. Clift repeatedly made unsuccessful attempts to pass Bowers while taking to the outside of the turns. Halt way through the race Aksland sUpped oft the groove and Teixeira dove underneatll and took over second. Bruce really turned it on two laps later to move UP and under Bowers for the lead and win. Allen Kenyon scored a double wIn. taking the 250 Expert MaIn event ahead of Bruce Teixeira, John Silva, and Jim Foley.
