.... ... = '" [oJ :i!: ~ U ;:..., U * Lacher Wins Ascot Half-Mile By Maureen Lee GARDENA, CALIF. Sept. 5th, 1969- Mel Lacher on his Farley-Davidson continued his winning streak by making it four trOPhY dashes In a row Friday night and also taking the Amateur-EJq)ert MaIn, and setting the fastest qualllying time. Once again, due to the fact that Nationals were scheduled In other parts of the country the turn-out of riders was small, necessitating running the Amateurs and Experts together. The Trophy Dash saw Lacher, Paul Conserriere, Ron Kruseman and Eddie Wirth come to the line with Kruseman giving Lacher the strongest cballenge on his Norton. The Novices put on a good show for the fans, with "Flying Freddie" Edwards on his K & N Yamaha really flying. Edwards took the lead earlY and never lost It but the grollP behind him put IlP a tussle. Ted Longwith (Kawasa1d) held down second for a while bllt lost It to Chuck Hart (Harley-DaVidson) and then slipped back to fourth place behind Randy Ellis on a Bultaco. Ellis really had a drive going to get Hart but almost came off in the South turn once losing valuable seconds. The stands were full of opinions as to who would win the Expert MaIn as with that line-llP, anything was posstb1e. By the fourth lap Lacher was out front with Triumph-mounted Lloyd HoucblnS in second. These two places were not to change but behind things were getting shifted around. Eddie Wirth (BSA) was hanging onto third with Ron Kruseman (Triumph) eager to take the spot away from himll:l1 right behind was the little tiger, Shorty Seabourne (BSA), driving hard. Finally Seabourne took over the fourth place putting Kruseman ahead of Keith Mashburn on a Triumph. Up front Houcfllns was trying hard but just couldn't make It IlP to the big Harley, and it was a triumphant Lacher still ahead at the end. (Results on page 20) * Lloyd Houchins digs up some of the Ascot clay on his way to a second place behind Mel Lacher. +++ TEAM SPEEDS FIRST-AID Third place man Eddie Wirth, BSA number 84 leads Ron Kruseman as he warms up to a TT win th. following night.
