THE TUNER By Bill Harmer Numbers Klal Wayne Ker_ !races a cardbo.d template to crut. a p.SOIIallzltd nWllb" plate for a dlscrlminatlnl rider. Wayne Kerner By Terry Pratt The next time you're at Ascot Park for the motorcycle races take a close 1001< at the number plates. Do you suppose that the riders and tuners that do the mechanical race preparation are also skilled at number pa1ntl.ng? Probably not. Chances are, the more eye catching number plates are done by the talented hands of Wayne Kerner. Wayne works out of the Ace Sign Shop 011 Market Street in Long Beach. He bas been in the sign painting and lettering trade quite a wh1le; his fatber started Ace Sign in 1929. That.makes 11 Long Beach's second oldest sign shop. Commerical sign painting bas become less a part of Wayne's work lately. 10 the last year he has done studio and location work for cm, Samuel Goldwyn and otber TV and motion picture producers. And of course he has his numbers racket going. "Lots of riders like personalized numbers", Wayne says. "So when they come 10 I design sometblng and they like to keep 11 for a few years." "Sometimes they have an Idea about what they want to 1001< like and I draw 11 out OIl card board." 10 the case of a rider that Wayne has already made numbers for and now needs replacements, Wayne goes through his large f1le of cardboard templates and picks out the ODeS marked with the rider's name. Eddie Mulder, Dusty Coppage, Eddie WIrth, GeDe Romero and many other well known riders have their names OIl distinctive number templates. Wayne's number Plates are made of a sheet of fiberglass that he cuts to siZe and tben rounds the corners. The number is traced onto the plate and then he paints 11 in. Wayne bas many friends racing at Ascot and in 1963 raced there himself for a year before a broken leg put him out of action. An active ten year member of the Htllloppers Motorcycle club, Wayne frequently rtdes Distr1ct 37 desert events. His desert sled TrtUD1Ph takes uP ODe at the better kept corners of his shop. As well as working for the studios Sayne says he is going to stay with the numbers because 11 lets him be around racing and the people in the sport. And U there ts any doubt about Wayne Kerner being the numbers bog, remember tbat for the last two years he bas sUk screened over 30,000 stick-on numbers yearly for the District 37 Sports Committee. H~PERFORMANCEKAWASAKIHEAD FROM WEBCO A new club for hIllclimb entbusiasts, AMA hIllclimhers Assn., bas been formed in ca1Uornta and the President is almost- undefeated slant artist Frank Durso. They have scheduled twenty hIllclimb meets for 1970. flrope Tries _••, ••to-I Webco 1oc. of 218 Main St. in Venice, Cal. says tbis high performance head is desigDed to improve speed and cooliDg at Kawasaki 238 and 250Cc machines.
