Main ACQIlME M:CESSORlES .. To Circle Spear Cafe C:'Ilente By Mike Capalite TIJUANA, B.C.- Wednesday some of the top U.S. Speedway riders met for practice on the new track which is destined for its first race July 6. At the same time a press conference was held fflT the Mexican newspapers. Admission was free and the stands were full of curious youngsters who had never seen a speedway machine before. Rick Woods accelerated down the straight and went into one of his classic full lock slides with the dirt flying about fifteen feet in the air. Suddenly the corner was full of newsmen and their cameras. Woods put in about six, fast, beautiful laps and when he came into the pits, Cec Platt picked up where he left off. This was a track more to Cec's liking as he is familiar with the larger tracks in Australia and did himself proud. Everybody had a chance to do their stuff as Johnny Carter, Lonnie Arnold and Joe Chanky made repeated runs. Conrad Doubles At Spolre Benders M. C. There were two courses, a novice course, for the loocc through 250Cc ,bikes, and at 11:30 the combined 500 and open class. The races were run at the same time, the idea being to have all the races over at 1:00 p.m. beforeitgets too hot. It's a great idea if you have the manpower, and the spoke Benders did. The 100cc Amateur/Experts got off at 9: 15 and they made the first four mile loop in about eight minutes, led by young Jeff Wright on his SS Hodaka. Following very closely was Jack Morgan. Then came Mark Rader and Terry Clark all Hodaka mounted. Wright and Morgan went wheel to wheel for five laps, building uP a lead on the balance of the pack until Wright blew a rear tire on the last The 250Cc Amateur/Experts went atit and at the flrst hill it was Gary Conrad on a Husky in the lead followed closely by Mike Patrick on a Yamaha. Patrick was maintaining second as Hall lost his chain and Larry Mulock took over the first Amateur spot. But then Mulock did a big thing on the rocky hill and young Terry Clark, first time out on his new Yamaha, took over the top amateur position. Conrad's luck held. He didn't foul a plug or get a flat tire as he had done all year, and he pulled in for the win. Patrick was second. Tom Poteet on a Bultaco was third and Bruce Dunford on a Husky was fourth and Clark moved up to fifth and took first amateur. The Combined 500 and Open Amateur -Expert went off next and Conrad grabbed the lead right away. Dave Smith, the Englishman on a new American Eagle, was running a very fast second and making the pit turn faster then anyone in his first desert bid, but he ran into trouble and lost a lot of time on the fourth lap. Conrad held the lead all the way and pulled in for the win. James Martino on a Husky was second and Larry Bergqulst worked uP to third after getting off the line dead last. Steve Kirk was fourth on a Montesa. In the Novice IPOCc class young Mitch Mayes on a SS Hodaka put it to the boys and took the win.
