Cal. sun. "Baking In the S\D1" must be the middle name of most of the riders that competed here Sunday, June 29 because the weather didn't seem to bother any of them. There were afewredfaces, and a lot of persplrati0'l, but then it's always hot In a leather suit~ Chuck Minert didn't loo~,like had red face as he set a new course record of one minu.te and five sees. fol tfle loop. Ron Taylor was close behind with a terrific one minute and seven sees. They were really packing the mail. Chuck rode a BSA 500, wb1le Ron accomplished the task on a 125 Yamaha. Bob Snaders started it off in the lOOcc Jr. and Sr. event by earning atirstplace after battling with Bob Hosford, Sldp Porter, and Gary Bancroft among others. Speedway p;J,ayed host to a young man from Idaho wilo proved to all the the boys from Idaho know about more than just potatoes. William Uhl, rtding a Bultaco, dominated the 250cc Short Track Events as though he had performed on the track as a regular participant. Another near capacity crowd watched liS the newcomer put down some of So. Calif.'s sharpest young cyclists to win his Heat Race, Trophy Dash and finallY, the big one, the 250Cc Short Track Main Event. The Main Event held the crowd spell bound as Mark Kruse, 1968's ACA #2 rider, and Jim Raymond, a very versatile fellow in his own right, fought a never ceasing duel from wire to wire to finish 2nd and 3rd with Jim Peterson 4th and Tom Vardeman, last week'S winner, coming across the line for a 5th. Engine problems ooce again side-lined ACA 1968 #1 rider, Randy Ellis. The 125cc Short Track Events had numerous entries with veteran Ron Taylor on a Yamaha winning both the Trophy Dash and the Main Event. Gary Scott, Cimatti rider, took 2nd in both events also and last week's big winner, Ray Vanderpool, came across the line for a 3rd in both events. There were many changes in positions in the 125cc events before the checker fell. Scott Autrey, riding a Brldgestooe ~ to overcome Larry Shaw to take 4th in the Main, with Larry finishIng 5th on his Bul. lt has already become very obvious that the championship tiUes for this season will belong to no one certain course in his mind and then he followed this same pattern to win the next two motos, giving himself a perfect score for the day. Bob rides a 90Cc Kawasaki that was super tuned by Richard Sweeney, who had a little problem of his own with a seized piston. He must have forgotten to allow for the extra 15 degrees in heat. They are both sponsored by C .H. Motorcycles inc. of Ar~on, Calif. Sanders Is 14 years old and has 2 years of competition under his belt. Ron Taylor was too much for his competition. He would build up a sizeable lead in each moto and lead from start to finish. He liked to ride on the rear wheel a lot which shows he has a lot of both confidence and competence. A Yamaha helped Ron win the 125 Jr. and Sr. class and 1200 points. Twenty year old Tom White followed Bill Fletcher for two laps in the first moto of the 250 Jr. class, but after once gaining the lead, he held on to win. He didn't win the other two motos but he did - well enough to take the class win. Tom rides a Yamaha sponsored by Rustan rider until the very last days of contention. The TT's were exciting as ever with Ray Vanderpool winning the Trophy Dash in the 125cc class but, the 125cc Main went to Mark Blackwell on a Hodaka. Greg Wiekam ran a close 2nd and Vanderpool only managing a 3rd for that one. Larry Shaw left his speedway hike at home this week and came in 4th on his Bultaco, with Doug Field 5th on a CImatti. The entries were so numerous in the 250Cc TT class that it was anyone's guess just how many.would actually still be uPright when they jockeyed throught the 1st turn. But all came out well and the 250Cc TT Main went to Jim Raymond 011 his Montesa, William Uhl, Bultaco, 2nd, Vanderpool 3rd (Bul) and Mark Blackwell, Yamaha, 4th. The 250Cc TT Trophy Dash went to Mark Blackwell. There was a 500cc TT class with Jim Peterson winning the Trophy Dash as well as the Main Event. Sandy Robertson was 2nd, Bob Williams, Sr. 3rd, and Bill Smith 4th. The amount ot these fellows desiring to rID1 in the TT Is really amazing. Again there were no entries in this size bike for a Short Track program. How about It guys? Let's run them in Short Track too••• A Open Class TT program was run with AI Smith winning the Main Event, Roy Jarrett 2nd, Bob Potts 3rd and Glen Apling 4th. The Wheelle cootest was a great success with more than a dozen bikes competing for a beautiful trophy during intermission time. 'Ibis week's Trophy Girl was Debbie Taylor from Long Beach. Junior at Jordan High. Better get in the contest, girls. Miss Orange Co. Speedway 1969 will be picked in September. (Results on page 21) SPORT CENTER 6027 Whittier BJ Yd., E. In the secOlld mota of the 250 Sr. class TOllY Hochgesang was 1eIIding and gabing 011 the stretches but losing distance on the corners as Kayomaru Kato, .a 24 year old 7 year veteran from Japan pressed him very hard. It was on the uPhill just before the start line where "Kayo" was dumped hard. "Kayo" explained later that he had the wrong gear to catch Tony on the stretches and when Tony went a little wide uP the hill it looked like a good chance to get on the inside which Kayo attempted but hooked his front with Tony's rear and went over. Tony got a first and two seconds to win the class. He is a member of the Jack Rabbits M.C. Club and he says his dad gets the credit for keeping his Bultaco running smooth and sweet. Kayomaru has been riding in many different events since coming to this country just 8 months ago. He rides under contract for U.S. Suzuki who are at this moment finishing up a new bike for him and the 4th of July meet at Saddleback. in the first moto of the 500 Open three bikes went down in the first turn so they restarted, then something else happened and they restarted it again. Then this reporter got sidetracked and didn't get the results. The second moto found Chuck "feets up all the way" Minert running interference for Bob Tryon BSA who was allowed to lead for 6 laps and finish first. Frank McNabb on his Tri. would get past Minert every so often but each time Chcuk would dive into a cornet' ahead of Frank and then unintentionally (?) take the corner just a little wide and McNabb would be back out In the soft stuff for a while. Frank got the jump on everyone in the final 500 moto and led for two laps before Chuck could get around him, after that it was no contest as "Feets" demonstrated his skill wb1le increasing his lead from 100 yardS at the end oflap 3 to at least 40 sees. on the final 6th lap. McNabb took second, Wayne Rutledge third 011 another BSA and somewhere back towardS the tail end puttered in Tyron without any helP from any;one. (Results on page 21) Krill Kills 'em Again MARYSVILLE, CALIF. June 14 - Another exciting night of racing was held at Triple M Raceway saturday. Jerry Lee Willis of Loomis, the "flying flea" of Triple M, took first place In the 100cc novice class with Neil Mac Doonald of Keyes and Clifford Jones taking close second and third. Vic Krill of Marysville again won a first place in the 125cc novice class on a 125 Yamaha motocross, he received the week before as a graduation gift. Running a real close seeond was Russel Davis of Marysville. From the looks of things Davis and Krill are going to make a fine racing team, Krill has been a consecutive first place winner in the 125 class since th\' racing season began in May at Triple M. It was Russel Davis' first race but he looks like a real winner. Randall Dunn of Davis took a tirst in the 200Cc novice class wi th Jim Adams of Benecia and Don Gentili of Grass Valley taking a close second and third. Charles Fairchild of sacramento took first in the 250 novice class with Robert McCoy of Roseville and Reg Kittrelle of Castro Valley taking secood and third. In the 200 amateur class Ronn1e Gonella of Winters was first with John Fite of Broderick taking second. Kenny Roberts of Modesto took first 250 Expert with Stan Anderson of Modesto and Gary Lozano following close behind. The side hack class was won by the team of Lucky Kirby and Lonnie Foreman of Yuba City. Running second was the team of Gene and Gloria Bass. Gloria Bass just learned to ride a bike two weeks ago but already Is as good a hack rider as most men. Paul Donaldson of Win tcrs and Jerry Gansberger of Dixon ran a real tight race for first, with Paul Donaldson finally taking home the first place trophy and Jerry Gansberger a second. John Borden of Pleasant Hill won first in the 650 novice class with Paul Mc Kenzie second. Most exciting race of the evening was the 650 expert class. Cliff Aksland of Manteca and Denn1s Dickerson of Marysville ran a neck and neck race withAksland leading the first two laps. Dickerson overtook Aksland in the fourth turn of the second lap. D1ckersoo beld first the rema1nIJtlr sill: laps with Aksland a fractioo ot a wbeel behind. a:
