Ties are broken with the higbestnumber ciphers and this elated the winner. Competition Secretary for the S.C. T.A. Jack Ward took the show pOSitlon only 2 marks further down with 35. All were Bultaco mounted, in fact the first six places were taken by the popular Sherpa T's. S.D.T.R. also made a very good showing in the el(llert class. Neighbors John Brewer and Bill Batzloff who both ride identical Cottons and are fiercely competitive with each other, took the first two pOSitions. Brewer lost 40 marks and Batzloff accounted 42 points for the day. Roy Sheridan used the Montesa loaned to Bob Nichelsen and took the third position. Cloee' to one hundred Amateur riders competed in the Ultra-lightweight and lightweight classes. George Karsten (Bultaco) was tops among the lightweights with 15 points and John Schulz took a brand new Montesa Cota'to second, dropping a mere 16 while Blll Robertsoo was down one more point with 17 for third. The amateur traps were really cha)lenging and the low scores incurred by the amateur riders attest to their abilities. In the Amateur Ultra-lightwetebt class, B11l Earl made a really remarkable showing by equalling Karsten's score with 15 marks. Earl ridesaHodalea and although the sections really favored the more powerful bikes Blll's ahilll;y enabled him to top Hodaka mounted Neal Arnett by a full seven marks. Dan Holton took heat three with come-back rider Dave Clarke and Holton's younger brother Steve trailing. In the main event Burres jumPed into the early lead with Sandy Saunders ehasing. While the rain was welcome to settle the dust, three members of the newly formed club who stayed uP till 4 a.m. watering the track probably did not truly appreciate the showers. Sevenl;y-seven riders signed -up to try this new course just to the southwest of Salem. Most of them seemed tollkewhat they found. The track is rough, and almost a mile around. There are several jumps where the riders get airborne and provide plenl;y of thr1lls for the spectators. The club plans on following lnternational Motocross Rules, running three beats in each class. Each entrant rides ten minutes per heat and the winners are determined by points. Three classes are oftered: 125cc, juniors and seniors25OCc, juniors and seniors-Open, juniors and seniors. The general consensus of opinion among the nearly 850 spectators was that for a cross-country race, this club offers the best"tac1llties available anywhere. Most of the course can be seen from the parking area, with only parts of it being hidden by trees and shrubbery. A promotional race by a local radio station featured the KBZY "good guys", all disc jockeys for the station. Gene Harrison, owner of the station, bad promised his many tans thai he would win this race one way or the other. Seeing John Vaughn clearly in the lead prompted him to cut the course practically in half in order to come across the tinish line tirst. Harrison was disqualif1ed. Second place went to Jim Trett, third to Jerry Whipper, and tourth to Clayton Henry. All were awarded trophies tor their efforts. The 125cc Junior class bad fifteen riders. Ronald Britton, Yamaha, was the blgb point rider in this class and tblrteenyear old Diane Cox, Penton, f1nlsbed in seeood place. Diane was the only girl to sign ~ and managed to do as well, or better, than moet of the fellows in her class. High point rider in the 125cc Senior class was Dennis Glasgow 00 a Yamaha. The 250Cc Junior class went to Larry Rucher, Bultaco. Mike Clark, Malco, woo the 250Cc Senior division and the open class went to Robert Leach on a 360CZ. Races are planned on this course every other Sunday through the 24th ~ August. , (Results on page 16) Foot Pegs for Yamaha cn,"& Fits MMeis - DTIB, ATI 12m x 1.2511I ISO T1Iread Liglllweigbt Low Cost NOW IN STOCK~i3i3;/Wfi!IIt ~,.""""",o SEE YOUR BARNETI DEALt,; 4915 Pacific Blvd., Vernon, California, Phone: 589-5488 ••
