RON AND JOHN STILL LOOKING FOR A WIN ON THE GRUELING EUROPEAN CIRCUIT. Suspension problems dogged John De Soto througbout the Italian GP. He llked the course and felt he'd do well butafter four hard laps in the first mota the rear shocks froze UP, putting b1m out of the race. He replaced them and was ready for the second moto. In the first lap a Russian rider fell in front of him and John went down. He got back UP and began chasing the pack. He never saw them. The front fork seals gave out and SOOll there was more oil on John than in the forks. John says, "!' m on my head all the time - but that's my strongest part." He bent the cross bar on the handlebar with his knee in one fall ••• The Yugoslavian course was described by Ron Nelson as "very rough and tiring." Ron finished his first Grand Prix there with a 17th place overall. On the French course the American'S troubles kept them from getting everytlltng together. John was off to a good start and was running tlltrd when he got in a crash. After a poor start, Ron worked his way UP from last to about fourth when his throttle started sticking. . Ron ended UP eighth and John Sixth. In the second moto John ran fourth a lot and ended UP sixth. Ron got UP to fourth but the chain came off with one lap togo and he finished last. In the last race the two tangled leaving the brakeless John to finish last while Ron managed a sixth place. They made $270 for their efforts. 'SCRAMBLIN AROU D-· • By Maureen Lee The Powder Puff Assoctation held their race last Sunday (Mothers Day) and for the second year straight it turned out great. We weren't there but our grapevine kept us posted. There were the usual complaipts, but what scrambles doesn't have some? One tlltng we always tee-hee over is that the Powder Puffers are among the few who control the startjumpers or maybe we should say, take time to control the jumpers. Last year, yours truly put John Rice and Tony Denius back and tilts year starter Tiny Doron put her dainty foot down and did the same tlltng. So once again John and Tony were on the back ltne. Can you imagine bikini pants on a starting flag? Maybe that really shook some of the troops UP tilts year. The girls do a good job and the sport can be proud of them, even if one male member of another club said wistfully, "l! our little club could get as much help as the girls dO, we could throw a good scrambles too." The Bixby Slough area is UP in the news again. One Los Angeles City Councilman apparenUy doesn't want any motorcycles in the area. John Gibson is his name and if he gets his way, the slough will be fenced off for all time. So if you're one of the riders (Uke us) who Uke to ride the slough, DO something about it and just don't gab. See the ed1tonal running S\lPU&.te}y on the situation. -, Fellow columnist BW BJakeslee bas a feature called a ,'WbotsU" and as a tip to Bill, another writer, Jim Davis, is butlding one In his garage that will be quite interesting when it's finished. That's all we'll say! We thoroughly enjoyed riding the desert Sunday (well, almost!) and can see where it can really get under your skin. But personally, if we fall down boom we Uke having people around (and ambulances if needed) witlltn minutes al hitting the dirt and when ye olde bikey breaks, we like the tool box witbtnpushing distance. So. O.K. we're chicken, but we'll tell you one tlltng: we've always had a great deal of respect for the desert brigade, and now after seeing the country they ride across fulIbore every weekend, we have even more respect. This is the week the spectal1zed DlBtrict 37 Competition Committee meeting will take place to come. up with some new proposed changes in scrambles. Ben Bot will officiate, with Dick KouDs and sam Crooks doing the taIIdng, asststed by John Rice. Now some of you may ask how come John? First, he'S our number one heavyweight scrambler and be's been riding a good many years (even if that statement does make Iitm sound llke an old man which he isn't). However, John rode the last Catallna, is a veteran al the old Rusy Nails and San Pedro tracks when he was a novice and bas seen the tremendous changes come about with the arrival of so many Ughtweight macbtnes on the market and he can come up with some good suggestions. With the Board In office tilts year in District 37, we'll guarantee one thing: there'll be some action instead of just talk. ~ ~ _ fI) t 2: la:l ..:l to) G • r MOVING???.•. - -I ~------Second class mail is NOT forwardable.
