' • motocross. About 1966 the A,F.M. began to come 00 again and soon there grew a rivalry between the two clubs as well as between the leaders of the clubs. At the end ot the 1968 racing season the hostility between the two clubs was very apparent, the question was, what was to be done? Were they destined to become even more distant or could something be done to bring a Uttle cooperation? A doubly puzzUng question because no one seemed to be interested in any type of agreement. Then the A.F.M. got the chance to break the ice. Both clubs had scheduled a race tor the same day, the AFM at the newly opened Orange County Raceway and the A.C.A. at Riverside Raceway. Now it is well known to all on the inside that the race dates tor the Riverside track are set in the beginning of the year and there Is no changing them, so the A.F .M. made an intelligent decision. to put their race off tor one week. It looked like the Ice was t1nal1y broken. All would be well between the clubs now. Hal The A.F. .M. had an election of new otflcer.s, with several ot the old ones bowing out and a new breed coming In and sure to do big things. They did. The flrst thing the AFM did was retuse to accept the other MICUS clubs' competition licenses (all MICUS associated clubs had bonored the others' licenses In the past) tor their Senlor events. This not only caused the already overcharged riders to wall, but the ACA then retused to accept theAFM licenses. WIly not, what is the line about the goose and gander? (The ACA does however accept any other MlCUS professional license.) I asked the AFM National Rep., Tom Finley, who's idea it was, his or the new president of the So. Callt. chaPter, John McLaughlin or The NaU. Tecbnlcal Committee (who issues their rules), or who? Well, no one wants to cop out to that one and no wonder! The AFM also jacked up their entry fee tor pro classes to $15. This they claim is due to rising costs. The ACA kicked off the 1969 racing season with a "ery good race at WUlow• They had almost 150 entries. The AFM unfortunately was to claim its tirst fatal accident. Was It just the odds or was the - - NOTE: The editors do not nece!!" J sarily agree with the opinions expressed in this d~partmen'" but publish them in the interest ot rree speecb. Equal space wUl be provided to any wbo wisb to take issues willi the statements orfered here. _ ~ track more dangerous than was thought? On May 4th this and many other questions were to be answered. The 4th of May was the annual spring date tor Riverside. The AFM elected to go ahead with their race also. L.A. chapter Pres. John McLaugblin said in a meeting prior to the racethatthe~e Counly Raceway oftlclals were pressurIng bim to keep a once a mooth date. Their idea was to establisb a regular routine tor their spectators. The result of this was doubly disasterous to the AFM. The weather wasbad the night before and the morning looked wet. The ACA was in luck, the morning at Ri·verside when the riders signed In was blessed with rain but by 10 a.m. practice time the track was dry and so clean you mlght have thought It had been vacuumed with a giant Kirby. It cleared up and the nearly 100 entrants took to the track tor the last time in its present state, because the day after, construction began on an entire remodeling of the track. The tarewell race at Riverside was a success. The AFM race at Orange was another story. The track was wet, sandy, and oily. Rising competitor Barry Pr'JV1sor, who rode his Yamaha in the expert class, described the track conditions as horrible. Although they ran the Irack in the opposite direction death plays notavorites. For there was' another tatal accident, this time to a passenger on a sidecar racer. I cannot attest to the conditions myself as I preterred to ride that last one at Riverside but one thing I am sure of. I have ridden Orange County too, and when it comes to a choice of two races, the best track will get the most entries. Next time we will take a deep look into this money situation.
