The Drag Race Scene By Dan Zeman Bill Chambers put in many bours of work in the past few months on his bike "'Ibe Hustler". Each week Bill learned a little more and went a little faster. Sunday, the 27tb, all tins hard work finally began to payoff. Bill worked his E.T. down to 10.19 and in doing so. took the Top Bike honors. When B111 crossed the finisb line first on his final run against Jeff Gough. he was probably happy enough to jump tlP and down. It wasn't the wise thing to do at 139 mph so his wife Janie took care of that for him at the starting line. B111 says he bas to give his sponsor, Pomona Harley-Davidson a lot of credit and it wouldn't have been possible without their help. Bill also says he keeps notes on what he learns after each run and that someone (unknown) took or borrowed these notes and didn't return them. U anybody knows of the wbereabouts of these notes, please can t act B111 Chambers or myseU. ~fter all, the things B111 learned. he had to learn by bimseU and these notes won't do anybody else any good without Bill's personal know-how. This is the first time for more than a year that we had any problems of anybody taking another persons belongings. The average drag racer 15 a hard working, honest person and there is no room at Lions for dishonesty. Joe Smith showed tlP. He only made one run to try out one of his new theories. He must have done the right thing. He turned a 9.72 E.T. and 154 mph. Joe says he bought a new house and is in the process of painting the kitchen. so he couldn't stay around for e11minations. Jeff Gough is bavingturningproblems. His machine cougbs half-way down the strip then cleans out and still turns over 140 mph. (How do you explain that?) Alex Weissman took Top Gas on his Triumph. Alex is getting used to thls type of machine and speed. Last year, Alex was riding a street class. B.M.W. He says be digs this type of racing. Slex's closest contender was Bob Braverman on his Kawasaki 3. Bob's best of the day was 11.66 E. T. and 117.35 mph. I can't say that's bad for a 500. Charlie Cash built another new frame for his 250 Suzuki. This is the second frame be bas built in three months. The first one didn't handie the way Charlie wanted it to. so he built a better one. Charlie made easy runs to check it out and found the engine mounts giving so decided to bang it tlP until next week. H.D. of Inglewood took Top Mod1f1ed for the second week in a row. They donated the ten dollar bill that was won to the July 4th meet just as they did last week. Ron Sommers beat "Dirty Old Man" Murphy in 0 class. The D.O.M. turned on the big red eye, giving Sommers easy victory. Stan Smith and Don Green were out with their road racers. These guys come down qulte often and say it helPs in tuning. Kawasaki was the one to beat in Street Division. Dirk Luljt rode the bike for the trial runs. Dirk let his bUddy, Jim Goodeau take over In eliminations. Jack Linn was also in that class on a Suzuki and Dirk wasn't about to take any chances. Another week bas passed and not much more in dooations toward the July 4th event. The following is what we have to date: Lions $1,000.00, Dan Zeman $25., Betty Nichols $25.00, 2-Stroke Modification $25.00. Ed Roth(Chopper's Magazine) $25.00, Pete Devlin $5.00. Don Green $5.00 and H.D. of Inglewood $20. This bringS the total to $1,130.00. Some of the dealers I've talked to ask what's in it for them? For one thing, they get a little blt of advertisement. The biggest thing is the sport itseU. LOMITA HONDA Bill Cumbers pusbed his 'knucklehead' to 139 ...h to take Top -Bike honors..
