Hopiils Expresses Hi.self At Tro;al TT Sweetwater Arena Races, Thrill, Action SOUTH GATE, CALIF. April 10 - Dale Hopkins, riding a Suzuki sponsored by Dale Brown Motors of Long Beacb, jetted to a 100cc main event win at the Thursday night TT. Jim Raymond, also Suzuki mounted, winner. of last week's chase, got put back a row for overeagerness and never made uP the distance. The best battle occurred in the 250cc TT main between Don Cook and Jim Grisbme, both Bultaco mounted. They passed and repassed on the quick, narrow track, lapping slower riders en route. The race was won by Larry (Yamaha) Shoemaker. Raymond came back on strong to take the 100cc flattrack money. The 250cc FT went to star-spangled Tom Yardeman on a Bultaco. (Results on page 20) Story & Pbotos by Bill Harmer SPRING VALLEY, Cali!. April 6, 1969. Easter Sunday dawned wet and dreary. By practice time the 1/6 mile track at the Sweetwater Rodeo Arena in Spring ValIey was in beautiful -racing condition. But by race time it was getting dUSty. Tbe entry list was a little sby but considering the fact that it was a Holy Day and with the threatening skies, the promoters were pleased with the turnout. With the exception of the l25cc class, the bikes were run in elimination beats. The Trophy Dash including the top two bikes in each class, was captured by Carl Byers on his super-hot Hodaka defeating such hot shoes as Randy Cushman and Wayne Hosaka on thetr 250cc machines. Earl Roloff Jr. wbo has been barred from racing by doctors' orders, was there as a spectator on his l25cc street legal Yamaha Enduro. In order to fill out the 125 class, Earl Sr. gave him the O. K. to race. The 85 lb., l2-year-old Expert won three of the four motos easily. Rich Hosaka on another Yamaha Enduro beat out Kawasaki-mounted Larry Deskins, wbo was Alabama and Florida Short Track Champion In 1968, for the second spot. Carl Byers, who has bad some experience on sbort track racing, bad no difficulty in winning the 100cc eventbut John Montez looked impressive wbile tooling his. little Kawasaki into the second spot. Suzuki-mounted Jim Raymond turned back the rest of the field to capture third. Randy Cusbman and Wayne Hosakaput on a thrilling display of sliding around the corners side by side on their 250cc Bultacos with Hosaka crossing the fintsb line a freckle a bead of Cushman to capture first place. Yamaha pilotLarrel Horstman beat out the other aspirants to capture third. The new (to San Diego) type of racing was highly accepted both by the riders and the spectators. There were numerous spectacular spills and many expressed the hope that this type of racing program will be con tinued. Fine Day At Dundee Above, Carl (3) Byers outclassed field of 100ee aspirants to post a no-sweat win. About eighty riders showed up for a fine day of racing, Easter Sunday. The weather was perfect and the track in good shape with just the right amount of rough ground mixed with the smooth. Donated by TnT Cycle Sales of Mc Minnville, the wheel walk trophy was won by Bob Letch wbo made it the wbole length of the straightaway. Larry Mascot took borne the bard luck trophy after looping it bard. In the Beginners Race, it was Kay Bryson the winner, while the 100cc Main bad to be re-started. Eventual winner Ron Denny locked horns with another blke on the line and they both went down, but Denny re-mounted and kept going. The 200cc Main was won by Rick Burgett followed by Dick Rome and Dave Puckett. Taking the 250 class by a large margin was Bultaco rider Dave Puckett, leading Larry Mascot (Husky) and C-Z mounted Don Yates. Open class leaders were Bob Letch, Jerry Beard and Joe Turman. The next race is scheduled for April 20th, and a large turn-out is expected.
