Adelanto Scramblers By Ray Cooper ADELANTO, Cal. Apr. 13- The trackappeared hard and dry and one rider mentioned that It was like riding on asphalt that had been sprinkled with sand. This was not the condition of the whole course but even so It appeared faster and less difficult to negotiate than the first TT races right after the big rain storm over a month ago. Some classes didn't have many riders so they bunched them all together while other classes went the moto route. Bultaco had a field day today winning 5 classes with a lot of suPportfrom seconds and thirds. Expert Jay Lewis (Yamaha) showed a cOuPle of novices how to make a short dry course out of a long dry course by taking first in the 50Cc class. There was a lot of competition in the IOOCc Am. Ex. class today as Gary Caldwell (Ex.) who finished second and Kirk Reddind (Am.) found out the the hard way trying to outdo Troy McKee (Ex.) who managed to twist his Hodaka uP to 1st. place. In the Open Ex. Class Buddy Carter found himself leading by a sizeable distance when his engine quit right in the middle of the first turn after the jump. The rest of the field got at least a half a lap ahead before Carter got going agaln. He made a mad three lap dash to the finish line, riding in the loose stuff and throwing a roostertail as high as that Yucca tree on the south end. He finished second overThere was one little guy in the 50Cc class who was so short that he must have been placed on the seat because every time he went into the corners and put his foot out, It lacked about a half a foot of reacing the ground. He made It around in fine style though. I have wond~ed since then just how they managed to get him off without tipping over. Ican imagine his mother his father his brother and a neighborhood friend or two chasing him around and around in circles before capturing him at the end of each race. HI Happiness By Pat Dempsey HUNTINGTON BCH., Cal.Apr .13-Across the street police were patrolling the vacant riding ground pictured in the" New Image" last week, keepingtunblkersfrom riding for free. But a short distance away, organized TT racing went on unmolested at Don England's tidy Cycle Park. Tom White on a beautiful Yamaha had taken such a lead that he started doing wheelies, to the crowd'S delight. Tom just got his induction notice the day before, so this may have been his last performance stateside for a while. After a bad start, R.G. Bare won the 500cc class with a taped-on clutch handle. The 500 Amateur motos were the hottest with Ron Knowles on a Gold Star battling Tom White's Bultacoandanother Bul ridden by Tom Clark. Knowles got the winning points.
