ORANGE. CAL. April 6 - Riders of the first meet In the Golden State Motocross Series were met by a cloudY cool day, a new course, and mud. It was the first of a series of six races sponsor>l\l by the California MotOl'sport ClUb, that will send the top most rider to Europe. Three of the events will be held at Saddleback and the other halt at Carlsbad. Class winners will receive six points tor each class win but cannot earn more than six points per day. The CMC laid out a completely new course, and many thought it was the best yet at SBddleback. It was quite muddy at first, but an extra long practice session helPed put things In shape. Bultaco bombshell Tom Rapp flnally shut the door on Southern Caillornia's two top small bike riders, Gary Bailey and Lars Larsson. In the flrstmotoTom snapped uP the lead and held It to the end. He was out in tront agaln in the second chase with Penton mounted Larsson breathlng down his neck. On the last lap, Lars sUpped by, but on the uPhill Just before the finish, he missed a gear and Tom, who was right on his beels, zipped past to win it. Lars was able to take the lead from Tom and hold I t In the last moto, but Tom's second earned him the 125cc class win. As the 250cc Senior class roared up the hill from the start, it was C Z mounted Tim Hart out front followed by Bill Silverthorn (Husky), Lars Larsson (Husky) and Gary Balley (Greeves). On lap three Bailey was Qut front with Larsson runntng second. They passed the !lag In 1hBt order. Balley has problems In the second leg and finished fourth behind Larsson, Silverthorn, and Jim Wilson. The fourth place was certain death for Gary. He won the last moto, but LarS'!llln was again second which earned him enough points for the win. Larsson was again on top In the 500cc Sr. class. tre:lJld Greeves mounted .Bm Wilson did some lead swapping In the !lrst moto, ut Larsson won It. On the second leg, Malco mounted Preston Petty and Larsson had a whale of a race for the !lag, and Preston nosed him out. Lars had things his way In the flnal moto, and he claimed his second win of the day. Even with the late start, the CMC ran things so smoothly that It was all OYer before six o'clock, and those who won SIX points were on their way home dreaming of that trip to Europe.
