• •••aR SADDLEIACI: BAILEY BESTS THE BUNCH I By John Shedd Gary Bailey avoids traffic jams by flying out fron!. ACCESSORIES including hard-to-get items! SADDLEBACK PARK, Cali!. - !ronman Gary Bailey was in good form Sunday at the ACA moto-cross. He completely annihilated the competition in the three senior classes, by making a clean sweeP of every moto. Over 200 riders turned out for the Saddleback event. It was a beautiful warm day with blue skies, and it was, without a doubt, the best racing day this year. The heavy seasonal rains played havoc with much of the course, so it had to be changed drastically for the race. Much of the hack section was taken out, and a very fast course resulted. Muck and mud was still around in some spots. A couple of corners were bard packed with marbles on top, and some ruts developed that were so deep you could only wonder It the rIders' pegs would clear. Each of the six classes ran two 30 minute motos, wIth the 125cc class starting the action at 12 o'clock. Tom Rapp, on his Bultaco bomb, was the early leader In the first 125cc moto, and It appeared that Penton pusher, Gary Bailey, would have his work cut out for him. Walt Axthlem was also a frontrunner, but he tangled with a jr. rider he was lapping and both crashed. Rapp lost first and fourth gear, and the invincible Bailey surged into the lead. Rapp's twogear problem was too much for the engine, and he bad to retire to the pits. Norm Benham, who was riding the only 1001::c in the class, took over second. Bailey had problems on the last lap, but his insurmountable lead allowed him time to push his scooter past the checkered flag. The second moto was a Bailey production all the way. He led from start to finish and earned his first trophy of the day. Bailey won the first leg of the 250cc class with ease, but in the second moto, he pulled a faux pas that would have cost a lesser rider the race. He forgot to turn on the gas. By t1ie time he got his Greeves underway again, he was far behind the last place man, and the leader, Tim Hart, had his C Z half a lap ahead. On lap four, Bailey had Tim Hart behind him and the checkered flag in his eye. Gary's competition in the 500 class was somewhat tougher. in both motos, he had to come from behind to capture the number one spot from Victor veteran, Chuck (Feets) Minert. Bauey won both motos. But the best racing was between seasoned racer, Minert and a fIrst year senIor, Tom Rapp on a Malco. Minert had his hands full as young Rapp was constantly rapping on his taU and trying to pass. Finally Tom made his bid and pulled ahead, only to seize his engine and push to the pi ts for the second time of the day. Even with the 12 0' clock start, Wes Cooley's organization ran things so expertly that the last event was over by 5:30, and Gary Bailey was headed home with half of the day's first place gold.
