Running Over La Fortune Doesn't Stop Him From Winning Story and Photos by Maureen Lee PERRIS, Cal., Feb. 16 - The threat d rain kept quite a few of tile troops away Sunday, but tile ones who dtd sbow got in plenty of racing and everybody ran tile long course. The surface broke uP some, due to previous rain damage but it wasn't bad and crashes were infrequent. Tbe worst one was in tile 250 Amateur so when tile boys got a little carried away going intO turn one, no one would back off and tile end result was three down and out. Charles GaM (Bullaco) won that hotly contested class witll Loyal Penn (Yamaha) second but in tile last moto it was Jack Holt (Greeves) and Karl Wllson (Bullaco) who put on tile show. They _.~ ~ dragged each other to tile checkered flag and took it side by side. Talk about a crowd pleaserl New papa Fred Edwards (Yamaha) won tile 250 Expert witll a very small Fred Jr. cheering bim on at trackside, whlle Butch Rotz ended second wi til Keitll Mashburn and Eric Olsen tying for tbird making it four -straight places for Yamaha. Botll tile Powder Puff and tile 50cc class bad small turn-outs; there were only six gir~s with Eulene Long(Hodaka) winning, but not witllout some competition from new novice rider, Glenda Holeman. She'S not only fast but she knows what she's -doing on the track and that's ImpOrtant in that class. Jay Lewis (Yamaba) woo the 50 go but it was tile novices who had tile most fun. and we'll tab Slade Long for tile up and coming rider in that dtvision. He bas all the tiger necessary to be a racer, and charges into a turn like a guy on a 40 incher. As we always say, don't underestimate the 50'S, watch 'em and you'll see they're not as boring as you tblnk. lt wasn't a good day for the big bores. Only four Open Amateurs showed and tbere weren't too many 500 Amateurs either so tIley all ran together. Tom La Fortune won but not before going down uP on tile bill witll a mighty thud and then being run over • He finished that last moto, but two hours later stillcouldn'tremember maIdng his melon; second place flnisber and friend, Buddy Carter follow- ed bim around looking like he expected Tom to keel over any moment. Hedtdn't. We hope the Ollen Expert class continues like it dtd Sunday. Their event was the best and let's face it, it's tile big bikes who bring in spectators. Terry Dorsch won, but there was some fantastic ridtng between him, Don Dudek and Mike Posey, all on Triumphs, while the rest of the class also put on a show. With competition like that It could bring some more of the boys back out with 40 inchers who got tired of the same old grind every week; but regardless, we're going to see some tremendous battles between Dorsch and Dudek, that's for sure. B1..... run. Now Tlley're Making Movie Of Inieve' Terry Dorsch fended off llIe efforts of Don Dudek and IIlke Posey III copp first open ... pert. All IlIree rod. Trlumpbs. "Color Me Lucky" will be the title of a forthcoming Paramount motion picture biography of motorcycle stuntman Evel Knievel. Producer Bob Hinkle of "Hud" and "Giant" fame will fUm the story, which may be narrated by cowbody star Cbill Wi1l1s. There is a good chance that Evel will star in bis own bioepic. f: Four backs showed uP with folI and Wade (H-D) winning. Daft RoescIl Z bad tile mtsfortune to lose his pesnnger folI Mike Goodnight in tile rock quarry but .::I living uP to back standards, Mike wa1bd ~ away bloody but unbowed. 0 The club really put on a good and we're pleased to report that since tile new District rule of allowing club members to ride their own events, they already have seven new members, a real shot in tile arm for any club. Notall cJDb members rode but three dld in the 1igIItweight dtvision and Referee Roo Me Daniels did in the heavyweight after his chores of running tech, inspection were over. It was a good day. Harley-hackers Don Kldd and passenpr Cleve Pettus (42) snatc:hed sec:ond In the hack rae. but not without a battle from the Triumph sldehac:k of Jac:k Moffit and passencer Keno lIeseber (30).
