The third heat was the best with Larry Taylor (Bul) and Ted Loagwith (Ossa) figbting It out In no uncertain terms, a practice they continued In the main. The Amateurs with three beats proved In eacb that they were going to put on a show. BSA star Dave Aldana slid out In the first turn, Keith Masbburn (Trlumpb) shooting on for the win while Don Castro (Trlufilpb) really blew 'em off In the second beat and Bob Haynes (Trlumpb) taking the third with Don Dudek (Trlumpb) rlgbt on his rear wheel. The riders lucky enougb to transfer to the next round got going and fans could see where the serious cballengers would be In the mains. For the Novice class It was obviously Fred Edwards (Yamaha) Byron Boaz and Dave Bellina on similar machines and the Bultacos of Too Sloan and Larry Taylor. For the Amateurs, Masbburn, Castro and Haines, their second beats being run with Identical times. Experts were Bob Bailey, who beld off Jack Simmons, and then Paul Bostrom. In the other group It was Skip Van Leeuwen and Dusty Coppage with Eddie Mulder sbowing a bit of his old speed when be held the lead for a while until sliding wide, leaving the opening that Van Leeuwen and Coppage were waiting for. "The Flying Dutchman" went on to take the tropby dash and the main. It was the usual drag race off the line in the main, with Coppage, Van Leeuwen and Mulder au getling off well. Coppage took the lead with Cal Rayborn (H-D) second and Van Leeuwen third as they started Into the lake turns. As the 10 laps progressed It was soon Skip in the lead looking like be was obviously enjoying himself, then Coppage, Rayborn and Paul Bostrom. The crowd then began keeping a sharp eye on Jack Simmons who was moving up on his extremely fast Norton. Bostrom was now third and Simmons moved into the fourth spot and went all out after Bostrom but starting Into the balf- mile wbere be was so fast the front end slid and althougb be didn't go down It took away the time be needed to close up the gap, so Bostrom finisbed with the third and Sim mons fourth. The Amateur main lead was taken over first by Don castro, and Don Dudek and BSA rider Dave Aldana following. Aldana fell down and it took Bob Haynes to make the cballenge with Keith Masbburn moving up fast. Finally Mashburn made his move passing Dudek and Haynes on the same lap and then nailing Castro in the lake turns. "Flying Freddie" Edwards won the Novice main but be did it by taking first spot over on the yellow flag lap making it three straight for Yamaha witb Dave Bellina and Byron Boaz behind him. Ted Longwith ended fourth after a renewal of the battle between him and Larry Taylor. Taylor was in fourth when Longwith passed coming off the jump, but couldn't bold onto it and sideswiped Taylor knocking him off the track. Neither dropped it, but Taylor lost so many places be bad no chance to m 0 v e up before the flag dropped. Skip Van Leeuwen spenl mosl of his Irack time In fran I. He wan his heat, the Irophy dash and Ihe main. There Jack Simmons, aa, and Ralph White, 15, close behind lhe leaders and leaning hard. Over ~e Jump: Dan Castro, 114, Keith Mashburn, and Dan Dudek 42. all on Triumph 5. ' ,
