U I tbInk it is pretty clear exactly wbat IIIe >. problem was. The only thing that really U basn' t been decided is what is going to b8ppen about Wade's ellg1bUU;y to participate In in t ern a tI 0 n a 1 competition In 1969. We have a letter from the ACU concerniDg this situation. However. we do not understand some of the statements made In this letter, and we are gofng to bold disclosure of the contents until we get conftrmation regarding one vitalfacl. Apparently, someone in this country sent a telegram to the Greaves factory stating tbRt tbe Dirt Diggers event was an international event. and was sanctioned as such, and stined MICUS' name to Itwhich could explain a great deal of the problem whicb has arisen. Until this matter is settled. tIlere is ootb1ng more we can bring out at this time concerniDg IIIe situation. Also. Pm very dIslIppoInted that Mr • Nlcholson did not send MICUS a copy at his letter at protest to the FIM concernIng the Wade sitmtion. We found our copy at the FIM's reply·to Mr. Nlcbolson's protest ralller bumorous. I sbbuId say "Bow does It fee 1 to be verbally spanked?" Especlally. when you're awaretbat you have violated one at the basic rules at any assoe1atlon (that a pratessional rider who enters an event, ls accepted and altered start money. must appear in that event and not ride anotber ~ We have tried to cool this situation off as mucb as possible as far as the FIM and the ACU are concerned. We have dis. cussed it here in our column because at all the verbal inquiries as well as IIIe letters to the editor. For some reason. tII1s matter keeps coming lIP, and truly. IIIe only ooe who will really be burt ls Mr. wade; certainly the d1str1butor In the United States for Greaves motorcycles will not be reprimanded in any way. 11Ie views expressed in lIis cCllulIIII, are 1Il0se of lie col......ist and are not necessarily lIle opinions or lIis new,.. paper. We'll start off this week by spreading the word that the Dirt Diggers grass track scrambles bas been postponed until June 28-29th. There was a mixup in schedultng; just too many polo ponies still tn the area. So to keep everyone haPPy the Diggers decided to cool It. Can you Imagine what would haPpen when the ring-dingS started tiring up in earsbot of those highly bred horses? Like nervous breakdown time. We'll also pass along a little cloak and dagger stuff. The DIggers November race may be so sl\P8rgroovy you woo't be able to stand It. How would you like to race parUy through a town. parUy in the rough and also on the IlMeb? We've been asked quite a bit about the law suit Involving the Grlpsters. Latest report Is there is still no word about court date etc. We've had our eyes glued to the pages at the 1969 rule hook for Sportsman Competition ever since it arrived from Worthington. and there are quite a few changes. Reed valves and 5-porting is allowed now. in tact, the rules are so loose that you can darn near do anything you want to your bike regarding swapping bits and pieces. The term "as catalogued" is no longer used. The one line we're most interested In Is "A 'rider may enter ooIy one class in each division." And division. my friends, Is either lightweigbt or Heavywelgbt. This too dUfers from previous years and makes us wonder about the lucky ones who can afford to bring two scooters out every Sunday (say a 100 and a 250 or a21" and a 650), riding two classes and receiving points for their best fintsh. It looks like thls Is a "no no" If anyone wants to make something out of it. The penalties section is also interesting. Get caugbt with a piston exceeding the allowable limitation and It's a 30 day suspension, a $25 fine and return or any tropbies won with the machine that day. The owner of the bike gels suspended for a full year. If you're itchy about them measuring your little jewel and say no. you're out for a year • The offenses section gets even worse, and sbould give some food for thought amongst a small minority of our grollP; there are clauses about riding with phony names. bribes and attempting to arrange the finish of races or to Interfere In the actual competition between the riders In an event. Anyhow, we suggest that all clubs send their $1.25 to Worthington and get a copy at the Sportsman Rules, so their referee can have one; it saves a lot of trouble If one Is avaUable when problems arise. Darnell hroke a water pipe sticking lIP just off the course, in an ill-fated jauntduringpractice. He didn't seem to get the hang at things after that. Rich Thorwaldson (Bul) riding out of C- B Motors in Gardena. California, pulled a great third after duels with Wilson and Darnell in the first and second motos. Tom Rapp agaln showed the way in the 500 Jr. class by powering his Christmas present (a new Malco) in for first place. That makes two wins in a row for the Rapp clan. Greaves enthustastP. Harber drove all the way from Las Vegas, Nevada to grab second 500 Jr. honors. Per Olaf Persson, (Mat/BSA) looIdng relaxed. brought home top money in the 500 Sr. class with hard-riding Jim WUsoo (Gre) in pursuit.
