they stood around sputtering bonfires iu the rain, langhing and
shi vering and saying how lucky
they were to have this real, muddy
moto-cross course to master. Rain
or shine lIle race goes on, boy. If
you want to beat the European
Champions you've got to ride this
stuff. They were determined to
learn to love it.
That was on saturday of the big twoday professional moto-cross put together
by the stripe-clad Dirt Diggers North
M. C. In the runny, hub-deep slime of that
day's events, riding a motorcycle was
largely a matter of adapting to rapidly
worsening conditions. Every rider was
equally at sea.
Mann Manages
Only Dick Mann had raced in stuff like
it when he visited Europe ftmr years ago.
The experience gave him a distinct advantage and he easily outdistanced the
other 250 Seniors around the 1-1/2-mile,
up-and-down course.
saturday night's weather prediction for
Sunday was more rain, with a strong
possibility of snow in the gold rush Sierra
hamlet of Placerville (formerly Hangtown) where the Dirt Diggers North do
their thing.
