So that Sunday morning, when the sun came out and halfway dried up the premises, it was as Ii nature had taken a liking to the molocross pioneers. With customary energy, the striped organizers revised the course and the racers attacked It with verve. News of the raging storm held down the number of entries and kept all but a few curious spectators at home. Those who did turn out included six (count 'em) number ones trom molo-cross and scrambles districts up and down Callfornla, and the two top American professional moto-crossers, John DeSoto and Ron Nelson. Best of Both Worlds 250 Takes Open Class Mann had business elsewhere on Sunday so the race was close between Gary .Ba.lley, Bob Grossi, DeSoto, Allen Kenyon and the old "Desert Fox" Glen Clinton for the open senior prize money. BaUey took the win on points with his trusty 250cc Greeves, pocketing $125 for thls weekend's pleasure. Trouble and woe was the fate of many future champions competing on those days. "The Devil's Stalrstep," a treacherous downhlll that dropped four stories Into a muddy dltcb with a sOUd-looking tree on one side and a barbed wire fence on the other, spooked nearly everybody. It would have been bad enough dry, but with zero traction It was "Geronimo!" all the way. Another Dirt Digger favorite was the .creek crossing, which drowned out more than a few muddy moto-crossers. Southern Callfornla's Steve Hurd took a ride to the hospital when he cracked a couple of ribs after an endo on what passed for a straightaway. He was the only casualty. BMW Wins MoW-Cross!? The sldehack team of Henzzerr & Billing easlly flattened the trio of threewheelers that came for a shot at the money. Their BMW was immaculately prepared and always seemed to find traction when there wasn't any there. Randy Lackey rode a TM Suzuki totop off the 250 Juniors on saturday In two motos and the 125 Seniors ended In a tie between Larry Mulock and Ron Keeping after sachs-mounted John Rice, who only had to flnlsh the second moto to win, sprung a leak In the rear tire and the darn thlng Just spun on the rim. Rice sat In the mud laughlng at his misfortune. Another of Mrs. Lackey's boys, Brad thls time, beat back the 250 Juniors with his Montesa, and a special congratulations goes to Al Bennett for taking 3rd In that class on a Triumph. Enduro and trall riders had an advantage over the purely go-fast guys on the treacherous terrain. Abillty to keep moving no matter what, separated the men from the boys In those difficult circumstances. Now that the Dirt Diggers North have demonstrated that their club bas what It takes to put on a top-notch moto-cross under the worst weather conditions, we may cootldent!y look forward to a golden age of molo-cross In both halves of the Golden State. Watch for their next event. It will be worth going to.
