All the r iders who participate In the Inte rnational Moto-Cr oss series know what it cos t and the spectators know what they pai d, but how ma ny know how they did it a t Pepperell? Riders who qualified ther e (30) were paid $2500 in s tart an d prizes . That means that riders did not have to pay to participate, in fact they were paid to ride. There's more too . Not only did the Pepperell r iders not have to pay (1) entry fee, (2) admission fee, (3) a special FIM license fee but the y also got four free passes for their family . There were even about fifty r iders who did not qualify who rec eived those free passes. All this was done on an a tt endance of about 7,000 paid s pectators . Out of this the y paid the European s, theAmerican s, all other expens es and s till made a handsome profit. This was all done with a lower adm iss ion price too. An east coast fr iend of mine indi rectly caused me to write this letter. He thinks the California sy stem s tinks. BILL BLAKESLEE Downey. Calif. FINE LITTLE RIDER Your r eport of the Santa Cr uz Circus was great but a li tUe confusing to us her e in the promised lan d, (Washingto n). You report John Maynard won two 500 Jr . mota' s and placed 19th in the third for a 4th overall (?) , Steve Holliday outsped his competition to win overall and John Hately won the first moto to take thi r d. Jo hn doesn ' t show in the results page. it's really not all that important, but we like to keep the story straight. John Maynard is my brother- in-law and a real fine little r ider, but he has a ten dency to tell big ones and we may never get the story straight. ELDEN R. DOUGLASS Seattle. Wash. ED. NOTE : Ow g to a scoring error, in Mayna rd was listed as a DNF. To make for more confusion , both he and anoth er rider carried #15 for their number plates. RICK HASLETT Torrance, Calif. OPEN LETTER TO COOLEY , I'm not concerned wher e Mr , Wade rode before Westlake (s ince entries for all previous Inte r -Am race s were withdrawn through the F .I.M.), I want to know why you said he was s uspended by the F .I,M. when a ct ually he was not.And for proof, Mr . Wade has a tel egr am from the ACU saying he was never suspended. I don't see much sense in your article in last weeks paper . And don' t you still owe me a check fr om the Silver Cup Mote- X series held in 1967? LLOYD BE. LINGELBACH Tuj unga, Califor nia DlSCRIMINAnON You s ure can' t beat the AMA vers ion of " equal justice for all." Isee tha t Jo hn Pe nton was s uspended from the AMAfor the promotion of the New Philadelphia Mote-Cross. Of cou r se, one wee k befo re, Bob Hicks of Cycle Sport Magazine promoted the Pep pe r e 11 Massachusetts Mote-Cross; did he get a s us pen sion? You can bet your position on the AMA executive committee, that he did not. T.G. CONSUMO Quaker St., N.Y. TAKE IT HOME In r egards to Mr . W. Fred Jon es ' le tt er in "Voices of the West" C.N. #48 I also agree that motorcycle racing and r iding has the finest group of people around and that motorcycle competition is the greatest s por t there is, but that there are some who don' t seem to care abo ut litter. It really bothers me to see piles of ' trash a t th e r id109 an d rae in g areas of Ia alif Southern C or n be cause if th e wron g peop le see this it could kill these areas for r idi ng. All the people I ride with make an effort to clean up after we're done r iding, and it 's not a hard job at all- jus t put it In a bag an d take it home with you. THANKS FROM ENGLAND Having jus t returned from a thre eweek visit to California I ask that I might through your col umns express my thanks and appr ec iati on for the wonderful welcome and hospitality received from the numerous motorcycle friends I met. I attended several events including the Santa Cr uz International Mote- Cross and also visited four clubs wher e I was invited to give a talk. I was greatly i mpress ed with the enthusiasm of your r iders and their willingness to learn fr om the dem ons tra tio ns given by the European mote-cr oss boys. In the near future it is certain that U.S. r iders will be vi s iting Britain in order to widen their knowledge in the tough wor ld of mote-cross . They will be made very welc ome and already ten ta tive arr ange me nts hav e been made for so me V.S . riders to come over in 1969. In clos ing may I wish you and your readers sincere Christmas and New Year greetings with a special me ntion to those I had the pleasure of meeting and who received me into th eir homes. E.C. RAMS CLEAN UP The Rams took extra pains to go around after many of the racers left and cleaned up all the trash. I was only a spectator but I was there a li ttle later than mos t people and saw the clean ground. It was almost as if a race hadn't even been run there. I'd like to congratulate the Rams for the good (clean) job they did that day. I hope that some of the clubs copy this good example. K.R. Reseda, Calif.
