He didn't tair as well in the semi though, talling Ul to motor troubles. Jay Kanemoto, 256z, won the last novIce heat with Sam Mangalin, 151z, In tow and interestingly enough the semi showed them quite close together again but with Mangalln in the lead . This wasnotmeant to be tor Sam, as Jay cracked him into the infield betore the checkered. The Amateur/Expert even t s were great and showed the tine talent that Northern CaUtor nia has . National #20. Gene Romero, edging out 1968 Cham p Mike Yarn. The NationaiAmateurchampion , Mark Brelstord showed his stutfby running a way trom the pac k in his heat. and the number two 1968 tndoor man, trom last se ason, Bruce Anderson, was also very appare nt. He did a nice Job winning his heat. Bruce is truly a sight to watch here as this lanky 6- tooter - pl us wor ks this short track. Charll . Marllnez , 158Y, hold s off Flyl na Bell F I.tt, 129Z. on the ten llt-mlle trac k. -, The tntermrssion brought out Filthy Scroggins' Pig Pen Racing Team. now consisting ot three J .A.P.'s, including a brand new shiny one. The three bikes took a tour of the track but the gears were way ott and It didn't prove particularly spectacular • As the Amateur / Exper t main was bei ng lin ed up I asked the 1968 Indoor Champ. Mike Yarn, about this season's s trategy. "I can only say that I'll try my bes t to keep my title." he said "but with Romero, Brel stord and Anderson It' s going to be roug h." With that he Jumped on h1s Bultaco and alter a tl!teen- lap thrUler was underway . Br uce Anderson led It ott with Yarn having to make up some places. Yarn has In the last lap, Yarn put a wheel inside Ander son in the firs t turn but to no avail and then tried the outside in the last turn. He som ehow pulled thi s outs ide lin e well enough to come up on the outside ot Anderson and then, tor som e unknown reason, as the two came UP to the tini sh Une, Anderson pulled a wheel stand. They cros sed the lin e so clo s e together tha t photograp hs are b e i n g scrutineered . Hence no official res ults tor this event . a grea t ability to inc h around people, on both s ides and at any point on the trac k, but try as he might he couldn' t pass Ander s on. Brelsfor d parked early in the main with a s ick motor and Ander son and Yar n wer e swiftly setting their ownpace.
