In street classes alone, entries . totalled more than thirty. In 'A' Street, Steve Kewis h mounted on a Spor tster turned the best E.T . He al so had the best s peed an d E. T . George Ols on took ' B' Street on a Tr ium ph. G,e or ge had nine other bikes in his class . Mike Middleton on a Yamaha came out on top In 'D ' Street. There were :- six machines In his class. With 29 bikes entered In all modified classes, Steve Brackett in Class ' A' was the man with th e best E.T. and speed . steve was mounted on a Spor tster . Also on a Sportster was Ed McDonald who took ' AA' Modified. Ed had to put down nine other Harleys before he pi cked up his gold. There was a lot of good a cti on in ' B' Modified. Draggin' Lady Joy Hous ton a nd him In the fi nal by Bruce Mi ller on an H. D. Sports ter wi th an E.T. of 11.20 , 123.20mph. Grant Hannah eliminated all other conten der s. Th en Grant did a mean thlng he eliminated Joy. Jack Lin n took '0' Modified . With Jack Murphy In his class, Li nn had good co mpetition. He was mor e pleased with beating the Dir ty Old Man than he was with the gold . Charlie Cas h had easy victory in E Modlfle d. All his co mpe tition broke down. Bob Braverman was chased out of Jr. Fu el Class . The r ule book says "No pump gasoline In Fuel Class" , so Bob went into ' B' Gas, turning In the be s t E.T. and s pe ed of all gas classes . Br uce Miller on a Sportster had .hls work cu t out for him In ' A' Class with s even bi kes ente red. Two of thes e had twin eng ines _ Cla:enc e Bailey' s ti wn engine Norton and Bob George 's twin engine Harley. Bob and Br uce wor ked the class down to just themselves , but Bruce s oon ended that. In ' 0' Gas, Doug Schwerms took the win on a Yamaha , turnin g an Incr edible 11.42 and 119.84. That's quic k for a 350cc bike . Disharoon s« Welch Top Fuel had mor e entried than any one single class , with eleven bikes entered. These eleven were Joe Smith, Don Har ris, Gordon Kately, Ken Kotalac, La rry Welch , Tim Durkey, Don McEvoy, Bor is Murray, Disharoon, Bob Abels and Dave Campos. With J oe Smith, Kotalac . and a few others br eaking before ellminlnati on, It looked as If Larry Welch or one of the New Mexico r ider s (Abels and Ca mpos) would take the gold. In r ound two an Inter esting thing happened . Dis haroon staged with Welch. Welch, as you know if you read the last two Issues of Cycle Ne ws , has been undefeated since he arrived In Califor nia three weeks ago . Leave It to Dish to lous e up Larry's record. ThIs ' was the closest race of the day. When the lights turned gr een, Dish pulled a hole s hot on Larry that was out of this world. Larry was pulling hard at the Big End. Dis haroon' s light came on, and believe It or not , both bikes turned 10.11 . The last r ound found Disharoon and Dave Ca mpos togethe r . That was also a close r un. Dish took the win, even though he didn 't think he stood a chance. Disharoon had waited patiently all week for El wood Sper r to arrive with the englne owned by Tom Rudd and built by Drag Spec ialties , all of Minneapolis. El wood finally arrived Friday morning and s tarted wor king with Dish right away • They finis hed the final Installation steps Friday nigh t. The englne, lncldentallY,ls an 83- l nch Sportster with an S and S carbur etor and aluminum cylind ers. Disharoon and Welch also ran Sunday at Lions and Dish did It again, turning an E. T. of 9.95 and 149.23. Larry lost with a quick er E.T . of 9.93 and 146.10. Junior F uel brought six bikes to Lions. These were Mike Ma 11a r d, Gary Rlchards, Bob Bogan, Bill Johnson, Jeff Gough and Art Houston. Art took the final round, with Jeff runner up. Jeff was turnIng quicker E. T .s than Art, but Art Is also good at pulling super hole shots • ThIs event was a big success today, but It was also a tragic one . 17-year-old Tom Poklngham was fatally inj ured when he lo st control of the bike he was r iding, crash ing Into the guard rail.
