Both were Yamaha mounted. 100cc standouts were Keith Mlller (Hod) , Ron Bell (Hod), Bruce Alford (Suz), and Phil McDonald (Yam) . This Novi ce foursome swapped places all night long before f1n1shing in the above order. Both 250 Novice events were tight. Had Tim Abshier (Yam) been able to get of! the line with little Dougle Mason (Yam) , he , rather than Mason, might have taken the trophy. Harley Sprints showed well in both the Novice 250 and -, , 350 classes. Bill Bartels (H-D) and Rick Talbot &-D) beat out porntleader Bob Greenstreet (Bul) In - the 250 Novice and switched post tions to run two- three in 350 Novice, close behind Wayne Whlse' nant riding a new ERS Sprint 35Occ. Due to the Dirt Diggers' big Hopetown bash, entries were down slightly. In the resulting big bike program cubic inches played only _~ minor role in determining the winners. All amateur and expert riders, 250cc and up, ran in one three-race m otocross. 250 r iders Loyal Penn and Vince Graves ran r i ght wi th the 40 inches of Mike Posey and Butc h Landguth, Vince really put the hustle on his PurSang and came from behind to win the first m oto , Landguth and Posey each picked off one of the two remaining motes, Butch came up the overall winner riding a T r I u mp h . Bultaco-mounted Graves was second and after mechanical trouble BSA rider Mike Posey picked up third. Open Novice l ooked like an easy win for Dave Brant (BSA) until he unloaded in the sec ond moto. Don Corbett (Tri) zoomed in for the win in that one and l ed the third mota until passed by eventual winne r Neil Winston. Neil played David slaying the 40-inch Gollaths on his much smaller Bultaco. Doug Mason made a clean sweep in the m otes, Strangely enough, no one make of motorcycle hac! more than tw o fini shers in the top three. Richard Matthews (MB) was the most consistent finisher in the Amato-cross . He was followed by Bob Sander s on a Van Tech- Yamaha and Suzukl - moun ted Peter Haas .
