Skip Van Leeuwen, plagued two months in a row by mecha.nicai woes, got back into the winner's circle and David Aldana on a rapid BSA ended hi s Novice year with three track records, Records aiso fell in other classes. Action started early in the program with high-point Novice Keith Mashburn (Yamaha) taking the first heat. In the second heat Dave Hansen broke Mashburn' s recor d of 2:27.01 by turning 2: 26.25 on his Kawasaki. Th e thir d heat saw Hansen abruptly lose his record when Aldana turned 2:25 flat, setting the tone f or the evening. First Amateur heat and anoth er record went to Ron Pier ce ( Tri umph) wi th Jim Rice ( BSA) taking second. But i n the second heat Mark Brelsford (T riumph) knocked five seco nds of! pierce' s new r ecor d wi th a 3: 06.50. Earl y in it, Skip f ound hi m self in third but soon got the l ead. Th en i t was "Adios " for the rest of the gang. Coppage won the second of the two heats in a r ace that saw Dan Haaby ( H- D)i try to pass Larry Wilburn ( Triumph}, on the outs i de com ing onto the fr ont straight . What looked like a front -r- wheel wobble put Haaby onto the ground in a spectacular crash. It looked so bad, ther e was a deathly hustin stands and the pi ts . But after lying in the ambulance for a whil e, Dan was up and moving around again I n shor t or der . With only three transf er places, the Novice semi went to Tom Clark on a 200cc Sherpa with Don Dudek (Triumph) trying hard but unable to pass him with Larry l.Uller ( Bultaco) getting the third and final transf er ·posl tion to the main . Mike Posey (BSA) put on the sam e kind of fight fo r his transfer to the Amateur main by coming up through the pack f r om the back r ow for the win .
