He asked for full cooperation by all who ride the des ert as the Depar tment is considering of limiting des ert events to the Stoddard Wells and Lucerne Valley area. To retain full use as we have now we must all pull together and work with them. Letters were read regarding the loss of point runs for 1969 by Pasadena M.C., the Jack Rabbits and the H11ltoppers but no action was taken by the body. There was more discussion on the continuing use of the helicopter at deser t events. This apparently has not worked out as well as hoped although In certain Instances it worked perfectly getting injur ed riders hospital care quicker than by ground vehicle. However , it Is the Rescue Three group whohave been giving most of the aid and the clubs will eventually have to decide what they want to do. Rescue Three provides their services free but .several clubs have already donated money to them including the Spokebenders who gave $150. All this goes back into buying better equipment for the untt. Nominations will r e- open at the next meeting and the bid board for 1969 will be up again at the Poplar Street Playground, November 7th. A hands ome golf participation shot in full color won first prize of $50.00 for Professional photographer stuart Land. William Blakeslee tied for first with a s ensational " at speed " shot. Mashburn U psets E xperts at Ascot Short T rack Photos by Dennis Greene GARDENA, Cal., oct. 11- Whathappens when you mix Novice, Amateur and Expert half -mllers together and pit them against each other on neutrai gro und? The answer at Fridaynlght's first Ascot night quar ter - mile short track was that the Novice riders put down their big brothers harder than hard. A last minute switch found the night before the 8- Mile National hosting a Class C short track instead of a Noviceonly half-mile as has been the policy for so many years . Novices Sweep Program The Novices r ode lJke this made them mad and fr om a total of 15 events with all classes racing together came 9 NovIce victories over the Experts and Amateurs! Four of these wins wer e Novice Keith Mashburn 's as he and b1s Yamaha scored the sweep in the quallt1cation heat, regulation heat, Trophy Dash and flnally the 15-lap Main Event. Experts such as Cal Rayborn, Ralph White, Sid Carlson, Jim MeMurren, Dallas Baker. Eddie Wirth and many others had to look at the rear wheel of green plate riders mos t of the night. Novice Dave Aldana teamed with Mashburn and the two set sail through the Expert and Amateur ranks lJke the Kansas Locust. Each r ider won two heat races before runn ing one-two in the Trophy Dash ahead of Amateur Bill Cody and Expert, Rayborn . Aldana then had troubles getting his engine started for the final · and time ran out befor e he could get underway. So Mashburn carried the load by hims elf and led from start to finish. The s hor t course for the AMA r iders and machine s has been run on a few occasions In the past but always In the daylight hours. The night course proved to be the bes t of any short track racing that has been held at Ascot at anytim e. It was the largest payday for Mashburn who took home over $200.00 and a trophy for his fi r st night of run ning against the Experts. It al so ran his short track streak to eight s traight without a loss as he swept the field at Lancaster for four wins las t August.
