MOJAVE DESERT, canr., Sept. 15-The
place Is called Deadman's Point and
the name of the game Is Moto-Cross.
The Desert Challengers played bost to
350 spectators and 81 riders at their first
attempt at moto-cross racing.
The course was designed after the
Challengers conducted an opinion poll
of likes and dislikes of numerous riders
and combined jumps, off camber turns,
sand traps and mud and water sections.
The consensus of opinion appeared to be
that It was a fun course, a tight. twisty.
fun course except for those boundary
stakes of T-shaped steel fence posts, that
are easily driven Into the ground butcan
just as easUy remove a finger. Most
riders would prefer those difficult-toplace wooden boundary markers.
The action started on time and the
125cc Juniors led off. Don Elde (Hod.)
led Bill Pettigrew(Hod.) through the first
. turn while approximately half the other
riders got all tangled uP at the ~lrst jump
from the start. Elde led the first four
laps and felt he had a comfortable lead
but his machine failed on the last straight
prior to the finish and he was passed by
Pettigrew but obtained a second by pushIng his bike over the finish llnel The next
two motos were won handily by S.S.
Hodaka rider Pettigrew.

The Big GUys Show How
The competition In the 250cc Junior
Class might be described as "fierce".
In the second moto, right In the middle of
the south straighaway, at speed, the two
front runners had a fistflghtl Naturally
they both unloaded and then decided It
was high time to get back to less demandIng contest of the race.
In the next go-round, a combination of
125cc Senior and 250cc Seniors were run
logether. This technique will normalli
produce two separate races on the track
at the same time but today In the third
moto of this grouP a Hodaka was leading
a Bultaco PurSang. At trophy time 250cc
r ider, Lon Peterson (C Z) was properly
paid for a fine exhibition of r iding and
125cc Earl Roes s ler (Z undaPp) dem ons tra ted that good equipme nt and consis tenc y is what It takes to win In a motocros s .

SADDLEBACK PARK!
Special
Events
As usual the I..pst amount of competitors
was found In thelOOcc Jr. cia .. and they ..e
shown here at the drag-race to the first mudhole.
The 500cc Senior class demonstrated
to all : watching that moto-cross racing
means going fast consistently. Lon
Peterson (CZ), Ron Nelson (Mon.), and
others pushed to the line to see who was
number one today, on this course. In the
first moto, Lon led at the start only to
take second to a very strong drive by
Nelson. In the second moto, traffic held
Peterson back and time prevented him
from closing the gap on Nelson. In the
final moto and final result it was Nelson
. all the way with Peterson second.
