Silverthorn Returns! With Bill Silverthorn back from hi s 4 months assault on the European MotoCross ci rcuits as a member of the team that represented the United States creditably, the 250cc Expert conte st was of much interest with Ward Ring and Wayne Hosaka ready to dispute with him. Hosaka went into the lead i n the first laP with Silverthorn and Ring in hot pursuit. Silver thor n was closing gradually on Hosaka and pr essing on the grandstand straight. Hosaka, aware of the Husqvarna pilot Silverthorn on his outside flank, went into the sweeper a little hotter than anyone but he can get out of and Silverthorn, trying to stay with him, didn't cut otf in time and spun out. His molo-cross experience put him in good stead and he didn' t l ose hi s mount but the slight delay put him out of contention for the fir st mote. Sllverthorn captured first in the next two races, however . Hosaka bad to be conte nt with second in the last two m otos and that steady performer, Husqvarnamounted Ward Ring f1n1shed a close third i n all three. Final counting of points gave Wayne Hosaka top honors fo r the day, Silverthorn was second and Ring was awarded third. A fter wInning the first tw o motes of the 100cc Expert contest, Wayne Hosaka bad to retire from the third moto when his borrowed Hodaka coul dn't make the starting line. Kevin Staftord displayed impr oved talent by piloting his Yamaha racer to first place in the 250cc Novice hassle but was constantly threatened by Bultaco r ider Randy Cushm an and Ka wasakl Jockey Jim Grace who f inished 2nd and 3rd. Tim L eque lost the first moto do the Open Novice contest to Triumph mounted Wayne Butterfield, but brought his 360cc Bultaco back handily to capture the next two motos and top honors in the class.
