Kenyon Sweeps Salinas Cerebral Palsy Benefit Scrambles For Both Expert Titles ... By Babs Chase .. Photos by John Ramos & David Basmajlan 15 e - SALINAS, Cal. , Aug. 25 - 658 r iders competed in the 7th annual ben efit s cr amo bles sp onsored by the Salinas Ramble rs CI) M.C. and the Fr a te r nal Order of Elks . A ~ crowd of 12,000 s pe ctators loo ked on. ~ When practice and then the hea ts ~ started, there were surpr isingly few ac cidents. What few there were, were <.l Bad Luck For Chase :5 ~_minor. :>. In the 250Cc heats of Experts, two fe llows were left s tanding on the start line with the ir hands up, asking for 2 minutes for correc tion of the ir engine trouble. The two fellows, . were great spor ts . They should get some recognition for their sportsmanship on the track. The r ider s were 86S Tyrone Cruz of San J os e and 5D Keith Carlson of Newark, Calif. Better luck next year fellows I During the sidehack heats, #7 Cr ash Roesch and Mike Goodnite took the lead ., . with no problems, while Doug Bingham and Ed Wade had many track difficulties . But when the Main Event ca me up it was _ a different story. . Bingham/ Wade took the lead ove r Roesch/Goodnite , and held it all the way for a fi r s t place win . Chase had had some tough br eaks this year, but is doing great now. When the wheel s tand con test was finished, they anno unced tha t there would be a r everse program for a change. The spectators wer e real ple a sed. So when they got the program unde rway for the second half, it was the 650cc Expert Mai n Even t. Allen Kenyon took the l ead r igh t from the start, and wha t an exci ting event this was. Kenyon is a gr ea t rider , and the youngest r ider to hold an Expert ti tle in the 650cc. class . He may also be the very first r ider to hold both light and heavyweight titles in the Expert classes, There is no doubt about it, Expert he isl A fellow who can r ide like Kenyon does ,deserves all the titles he can get. DOUble For Kenyon In the 500Cc Novi ce main Jay Grilli and John F ritz came out pr e tty good , after crashing in the first turn tor a r estart. Gr illi, who rides a Bultaco, won his event with F ritz coming in for a s ec ond. And then with the 250cc Expe r t Main, the exci tement began to grow. Kenyon having taken the 650 Exper t title, the cr owd was wondering, is it possible for him to pull a double ? And he didl It was Kenyon all the way! Dennis Huff, who competed in the 250Cc Amateur event, took a beautiful lead, only to lose it to the dete r mi ned r idi ng of. Harold Raggio and Scott Diffenbaugh . Huff had to settle for a third place in the Main . Raggio of Daly City, who r ides a Yamaha, di d win this event, with Diffenbaugh, of Salinas, on a Suzuki, second. Lots of Brass { BULTACO W ESTERN up to the fi r s t place spot. Going down the . s traightaway his engine quit, s o no 500 Main for Johnson. In the first heat of the 650CcAmateur s, 3D Dale Gray grabbed the lead of! the s tart li ne into the fir st turn, only tolos e it, s lide back to 5th place and the n to 8th, one place too far to ride the Main . But he ha s be en doing a r eal fine job in his riding. Chuck Marcucci won this heat, but had to settle for 5th in the Main Event . Y amaha mounted Scott Di llenbaugh looks happy aft er winning the 350cc Amateur Main. In the 200cc Ama te ur event Jerry Tyle r of Lodi took the lead from the s tart line a nd with a wee bi t of pressure from Jim Robertson, Tyl er decided he did not hav e a ny time to spare, s o with a s li ght turn of the throttle , it was up, up and a way with Tyler and Bultaco all thewayl The 658 r iders were not fini s hed racing until 6:30 p.m, This even t was the bi ggest of the seven annual Cer ebr al Palsy Charity Scrambles. The club gave out 102 dona ted trophies to the riders. The trophies were really very pretty, and thi s made the fellows r ide a little better than usual as the y fi gured, " 1sure want one of those trophies for, my mantle ."
