HAM AND SPINKS TOP TROJAN TT JUNIORS By Mike Capalite Photos by Bill P etti grew SOUTH GA T E, c at., Aug . 29- Th ere was l ots of raci ng and l ots of upse ts as a r ecord entry of over 80 r i ders converged on the r egular Thursday night program at Trojan Racewa y . With the riders being able to ride In both the TT and the short track , many of the r i ders take the opport uni ty to get a little mo re practice at compe ting In both types of even ts . It seems that since the popular! ty of Cl ass A short track has gr own so m uch in the l ast few m onths, the popularity of the spo r tsman short track has grown along with It, In fac t, starting September 10 on Tu esday nights, Trojan Raceway will start running 250cc Class A Shor t Track for a purse of 40% of the gate . As this will be Class A , It means that fuel wi ll be allowed as well as the use of special frames and such . phy as Gene Cannady ( Hodaka) took the win over Vin cent Graves (Hodaka) and Mar k Blackwell (Yamaha) . Gary Bailey went all the way and also entered his Greeves in the 250cc Senior sho r t track and proceeded to add this class to his list of wins as he topped the l\latn Event . Th e 250cc Juni or short track went to L arr y Shoemaker ( Yamaha) , but as it was, he had to fi ght fo r It all the way as second place man Loyal Penn ( Bultaco) was bumpin g hi s r ear wheel all the way . Gar y SCott ( Yam aha) finished In the third slo t . The 100cc Senior TT Main was a r eal go- around as Gary Bailey (HodaJsa) and Paul Wilde ( Yamaha) had fought It out tooth and nail In the heat race when Paul had taken the le ad and when Gary tried to pass him on the in side i n the hairpi n, Paul closed the gate on him , and there was no place for Gary to go but r un over ~ they were both moved Into the Trophy Dash, It was thought that her e would be anoth er battle, but Paul blew It with a wheelle off the line and Gary went on to the T D win. The Main Eve nt provided the race the crowd had hoped for as Gary and Paul went at It hard fo r the full race with Gary coming out the win ner with Paul seco nd and Bryan Spinks (Yamaha) . In third. The 100cc Juni or TT was another battle be tween David Ham (Brldgestone) and Jack Morgan (Ho daka) with the two r iders changing the lead back and fo r th wi th David finally coming out on top wi th Jack In seco nd and another member of the family , F r ank Mor gan (Hodaka) finishing In thi rd . In the Senior Shor t Track 100cc Class, It was an old f amiliar sto ry wi th Paul Wilde being the man to beat wi th nobody able to beat him, but sec ond went to Gary Bailey (Hodaka) who had enter ed the short track for the first time, and al though he did very well, he was unable to catch Paul's very rapid Yamaha. Third place went to_ Dan Hazel (Yamaha), Th e 100cc Juni or Division saw an old South track rider who hasn't been out for a f ew years come back to take top tro- the tires, so this he di d and still took the l ead. Th er e was a discrepancy as to whether this was covered by the disqualifi ca tion rule or not and the officials ruled that a rider runni ng over the tires Is still I n bounds because theoretically this would have a tendency to slow him down or get him In trouble more than help him, but I gues s no one ever ex plained this theory to Bailey because he didn't even slow down goi ng over the tires to take the lead and the wi n. As place In the 100cc TT Main Even t. the win . I n the 250cc Junior IT, it was Bryan Spinks (Yamaha) who put on the show as he was getting around In beautif ul style and staying ahead of the secon d place man Larr y Shoemaker ( Yamaha), in fac t, Gary BaIley ma y have some' trouble on his hands when this boy moves up i nto the Senior class. Third and fourth place went to Gary SCott (Yamaha) and I r wi n Moon ( Bultaco) . By the time the 250cc A Main cam e uP the speed was almost up to normal f or this track. Gregg opened uP his 250cc and took the win In this event, then went up one class again to gr ab the 500cc Maln . Mike just start ed racing agaln I n July after spendin g som e tim e i n the service. He is now waiting for his Class C NovI ce license . He i s one boy the Novices will have to watch out fo r . Bernie Wheeler, on a Honda, aced out Bultaco-mounted Mark Baker to wlnboth I . WUltams BRUSH PRAffiIE, wasn., A ug. 25 - Although the track was wet, and It rained most of the day, Mike Gregg r iding his No. 1 250cc Kawasaki won the 250cc Trophy Dash and moved up one class to take the 500cc Trophy Dash, too. As the Mains started the rain stopped and the track started drying out. A s It dried the riders started turning on the speed . ~ . 100cc Trophy Dash and Main Eve nl winne r Bern ie W ler enlered the 200cc class aboa rd hee hls 100ccHonda and he ld a well earned fou rth In the A Main. Bernie Is espec ia lly good on a wet s urfac e Itac k. the Trophy Dash and A I\Iain In the 1DOcc class on a very wet track. Bernie Is a good r i der and is always hard to get around, but he is at his best on a wet track and went on to prove it by holding f ourth position In the 200cc A Main on his 100cc Honda. Bernie Is now third place In 100cc sportsman point stan din gs for Dis tri ct 22. He Is also In seventh place I n the 200c c standings and seems determined to m ove up in both classes .
