A 4O-in. machine belonging to one or the riders, caught fire In the parking lot near the pits, and was completely destroyed. Races were soon resumed, conllnu!ng on willt lite 100 Amateur Ma.1n Event . Fred Bennet aboard a rocket-powered Hodaka took the checkered !lag first, willt second going to Fred Guzzi, also Hodaka. Bennet's victory was probably the most Impr es s ive, yet unglorified win or the day. He held a halfa-lap lead at lite finish over the second place man; quite a feat on this type of a track. The next race up was the 200cc Novice Main. This event got off to a crashing start as two riders went down rather painfully, while attempting to take orf lite 11ne. Fortunately, both were able to make the restart that quickly followed. This lime It was Dave Bestonl (Suzuki) who grabbed the lead from closely-following Jay Boyd, and Dave's brother, Steve. Dave held his !lrst plac e to the checker, making It an easy-looking win. Acti on In the 250 Ama teur Main moved at a fas t and furi ous tempo. The Main Event was a more closely -c ontes ted battle between the fi r st thr ee riders - Bud Gibs on, Jim Rice , and a newly transfer r ed A m at e u r , Don Ivan. Gibson 'emer ged from turn one In first with heat . race winner Ivan In second and Rice in third. On lap three, Rice managed to get around Ivan , as he missed a gear. Rice then quickly pulled up on the leader, Gibs on, and tried several times to pass. On the next to last lap, Rice attempted to pass Bud on the outside, but was forced wide when the leader taclt ully (?) switched grooves . Their going wide gave Ivan a chance to slip under the iwo fr ont runners by taking this Inside groove. The outcome or the race was decided when Gibs on came bombing down from the outside and sliced Ivan orf, forcing hlm Into lite bank. It was Gibson, Rice and Bob Masters, In that order, who took home the brass . The 250 Expert race was a no-contest match as Pa ul Johns on had shown up to ride. Paul, currently leading the district In points, tooled hls Suzuki to another easy win, ahead of John Silva and Dave Belllna. Dillard Does Didoes The 350 Novice event was the scene or a spectacular crash, as heat winner Gary Dillard drove hls Honda orf the edge of the track to avoid r unning over a fallen rider. Dillard shot out into space, doing four hairy-looking endos before finally coming to a halt. Gary, who had been in second plac e befor e hls crash, demonstrated a true sense or sportsman racing. He was not injured. Steve Wolkow rode hls .. 360" Bultaco In fine s tyle to take the 500 Novice Ma.1n win. However, Wolkow had hls worJe-Cut out for him as be advanced from 5t1l place to the lead in just three laps. John Kellam, early leader in the race, manto hang onto hls second position to the checker, with Rod Tavares following closely beh1nd for a third. The " spring chicken" or District 36, Bud Kneass, leading Alle n Kenyon (who r eally looked good on a four stroke). Then came Bob Souza, BobBoaz and Bob Gros s , really due11ng It out. The rest or the pack followed behlnd carrying on their own war , but tn no avail. Grossi, riding a 360 Montesa In 5th place, finally took over the four th position by getting around Boaz. Bob then quickly moved up on the first three riders . However, Grossi was unable to advance and the win went to Kneass with Kenyon second and Souza in lhlrd.
