To start the new scene ottrlght wehad a f ew changes In the winn ers, like f or Instance in the 200 Class . Milan Vickers hadn't lost a race at Sacramento in 7 or 8 weeks; well, be fell In the heat after leading several laps. I n the MaIn he started on the 4O-yard handicap line, since every time someone wins a race they go back five yards, to about a 40yard ma.zimum. imichrome \~~~ .Sbines Sud_ly Slmlchr_ Is a honey rCI...s quick as a bunny ~OMPETlTlON CHEMICALS 704 Washlneta. Milan started threading his way through the pack and was riding peg-to-peg with Sparky Pinola, who has been doing just great since he switched to a 175 Kawasaki, the same as Milan's flghting for the second spot. The last lap coming down the straight Vickers nosed by - an excellent show of riding by both men . Blackman Blasts Ron Blackman was ott and running In the lead in the 100 heat, but he had to ride real hard to earn the win as Bill Strange was on his taU waiting for a mistake that never came. In the next heat Jim Varley took the lead with a real good battle going on for second. Walt Burres came from the back and moved In to second, pass ing them all in one whack. He caught Jim the next lap and rode wheel-to-wheel with him, then took over the lead. In the Main he grabbed a well-earned second as Ron Blackman rode a f1a wiess race to show the spectators his wlnn1ng the heat was no fluke. Two wins; not bad for one night. The 100-200 Amateur MaIn was next up, wi th John Grant taking the win In the 100 class on a Mota- Beta . Joseph Boll was ott the line first but coming out of the first turn it was Ralph Gutierrez in the lead. Next lap or so Mike Ellls moved , up to make his bid for the l ead, and Ralph held him back sev eral laps before Mike got around to take the win . The 250 Novice Main saw Bill Cal1cura take an early l ead on a Ducati but It was short-lived as Ji m Crenshaw on a Yamaha came up to r elieve him of it. Don Coleman was up close also and he got by Blll about the same time. Blll held back Sam White for a whi le before falling victim to him also. He started in f ront and ended UP fourth; it seems the Ducati lacked a little on the hor ses. Di ck L ewis ott fir st wi th the rest of the 250 Amateur pack on his taU, making it a tour-way go f or the lead. Dickflnally stretched it a little and the r est wound up battllng for secon d spot. Jerr y Pratt had his hands full trying to keep it but Jim Rodare was a little too much f or him as he snuck by. Jack , Driggs had high hopes also, but couldn' t quite make it and had to settle f or fourth. , Good 250 Battles The last and largest race of the night was the 250 Expert MaIn. They even had two heats which is really unusual andall three races proved real entertaining as thrills and spills were many. Kenny Roberts was off the line first as usual wi th Gary Wlll1s right on his taU. Gary took over the lead in the second turn and proceeded to run away with the race on his super-fast Harley. In the second heat it was George Carter of Carter Cycle Sales In Rosev1lle away and running like a scared rabbit. Mike Corcoran decided he wanted the f r ont spot and proceeded to take it after a good batUe. a t W Axthelm Tri umph-Suzuki alt Motors ,1049 W. 5th St., Pomona, Calif. (714) 629-8642. Richards CHICO, Cal., Aug. 10 - It was " crash ni ght" a g a i n Saturday at Cycleland Speedway'S !lattrack r aces with all of those crashing apparently doing flne. In the 10Dcc scratch nee, .Kawasakimounted Steven Goff of Oroville took the last lap flag with only a slim lead, which he was abie to maintain until the last corner. As he sensed the second place rider's gain on him, Go ff cranked it on and went down. Right behind him , John Grant of Sacramento, riding a Mota- Beta, had nowhere to go but right across Goff's neck - and that's the route he took. Later in the 200cc Handicap MaIn, Mike Rockwell, Palmero Yamaha r ider, fell down and started a series of crashes . Instantly there were five riders and parts of their machines all over the track. Though it was only the fifth lap, the referee called the race, whi ch was already a re-start ma tch beca use of another less spectacular (but just as hurting) crash . More Crashes IR'DGESTOIIE AT 1125 SO. LA BREA, INGL EWOOD The MaIn found Roberts going like gangbusters, but WIllls was right behind again and relieved him of the lead. It seemed like everyone was fighting for a spot, be it first or last. Gene Conant moved up to hattie Kenny for second and Gerald Henderson proceeded to workhls way up through the pack alongwithRalph Waldman. Mike appeared to be biding his time and about the middle of the race decided to make hi s move and ended up third. Gary held a strong lead all the way, with Gene doing the same in second.
