~~~ SADDLEBACK MOJO-CROS Story and Photos by Maureen Lee ca., CORONA. Aug. 18 - The ACA threw their first mote-cross on the Saddleback Park circuit Sunday, and a good one it was too. They had 171 entries proving again tnetmoto-ctoss is growing by leaps and bounds in this area, and we'll say again: Motocross is not a TT 'scrambl es or the desert and if you think that things can get..Jpo rough, then you are not cut out to be a mote-cross rider. Tussle ollhe 360's - ewnlual winner Lars Larsson (HusqYama) Is led althls point by Malcomounted Preston Petty In 500cc Senior class at Saddleback ACA moto-elOss. CYCLE INORLD MAGAZINE AND THE SOUTHERN CALIFORIA TRIALS ASSOC. Present the - Hodakas again proved their worth in both the 100cc Junior and Senior classes. Rusty Burkert won the Junior with two wins I n both rounds with Norm Benham taking the second behind him and Dan Da1gh third. There were 32 entries in that class alone. There was quite a bit of shuUllng around back In the pack and as only two rounds were run It was whoever got the highest number of points first that received the highest flnlshingp1ace. For example Denny Groover (Hodaka) scored his two points in the first round and John Rubcic (Kawasaki) his two in the second so Denny Is listed sixth and John seventh. ThIs system also came into use in the 100 Senior and we wish there had been enough time to run a third mota. Davtd Aldana (Suzuki) was walling out In the lead on the first round and dropped It but good at the top of the course. Tom Rapp (Hodaka) who is a real threat in that class was in second and naturally popped into the lead. He won that round scoring his 8 points first. Aldana won the second round handUy but his 8 points came too late giving him the second over-all position. We stress this because some of the riders are unaware of how the scoring system Is used when a clock Is not kept on the actual running time on the ' track, or a 3-heat system Is used. Ther e are still openings for Friday school. The 500 Senior class went to Lars Larsson and we don't , really want to mention how far ahead he got on the second round. He Was quite fantastic, and even trailing around some of the course marker flags didn't slow him down. Preston Petty (Malco) started leading the first round but Lars passed him with Petty ending second. Hard luck man was Bruce Jackson (360 Greeves) . Bruce started way back In the pack and made It up to Gary BaIley on the new proto- type Greeves who was holding down third. Bruce then passed BaIley and later on that Infamoas dow:lhlll off-camber, Jackson slid out and BaIley got hi m back and after that anyone could see Jackson was having troubles . Checking later we saw that his rear brake was totally useless and without a rear brake, It's " adi OS," especially on a course like that. Two more hard luck men tor the day were WUlIe Hockie and Greg Smith, both in the 250 Junior class. There were so many entries In this division that they SAMMY MILLER TRIALS SUNDA~ AUGUST 25TH $4.00 mail entry, $5.00 posl entry, two cIa...a; Amateu ra and Experts/Maslers. ThIs Is a marvelous little machine, looks like a baby Husky and handles like one too, according to riders who have gone fast on one. We had an opportunity to putter on one courtesy of Lars Larsson and have been in the garage casting suspicious glances at our Hodaka ever since. Anyway •••Gary BaIley wrapped up that class n no uncertain terms with two straight overall wins. Tim Hart (Guazzonl) took second and another Penton with Bob Kulek the third. Hart's little Guazzonlls another machine that bears watching. It flat goes I There were no 175cc Seniors but there were three 175 Juniors. Jack Vaughn (Ossa) wrapped that one up and on ' the second round was second by the time the mob hit the top of the hill only to drop a chain which had to be fixed before he could get going again, but It was a very happy Vaughn who went home with his trophy. The second 250cc Senior round was the most exciting of the day. Lars Larssoo (Husky) had won the first round with John DeSoto (Montesa) second. Preston Petty (Suzuki) had been In third but dropped It and ended last . Come th e second round It was Husky-mounted Lon Pe terson who took the lead with Pres Petty In second . Pres took over the lead on the first lap before they got up the hill to the tower, but as they had hit the down-hill offcamber It was John DeSoto who took over by taking the wide line around the righthander following the down-hill, with Petty going to the Inside. Larsson, however. was right hard after them, passing Petty and then setting sail after DeSoto. He caught up to the hard-charging Hawaiian right after the drop-off and the pair of them went drag racing up the hill to the uppermost part of the course with Larsson ending the winner. Petty hadn't been slowing down though, and on the checker ed flag lap was rtgh t on DeSoto's rear wheel as they w.ent up the hill toward the tower. John made It first, but all spectators were saying "Wow," Larsson L eaps To Win AND TRIALS RIDING SCHOOL " S1 50 #183 Kurt Lohmoy. and his Bolt.co aped til 250cc J u lor honors , which he s_a 'til be .nakln, a habit.
