Eddie Crowell, #92, pulled In seventh ~ after lending a hand to Burpo, and Jeff Wright, #76, was close behind him, after u:J getting off the line last. Ron Burpo ~ followed Wright In. Mary Ann Eyre was :c: the first gir l to finish, taking sixteenth. '-l In the pi ts after the race, Patrick was ..,J heard to remark, "I'm glad I have high U gearing, as that twin just ate up the fire roads." State Championship Hare Scrambles c: Story and Photos by Dick Wright , LAS VEGAS, Nev., Aug. ll-There is something special about hare scrambles in Las Vegas, the city that plays all night (particularly after a State Championship!). Twenty-five miles south of Vegas was the setting for the large contingency of riders from California, Nevada and other states, who were lined up and ready to go at 10:00 a.m. for the three loops of a fast, mgged, twenty-five mile course. A quick , ascent brought us to a bea utiful threemile sandwash and a fi r e r oad followed by a fast trail, and then s ix danger marks cautioned the way to the only bad rock on the entire course. They made the first loop In about twenty-five minutes and Patrick came around with an unbelievable lead. Maxwell had gotten off In a san dwash and Harold Mortensen, #55 on a Triumph and a member of the Checker s M.C., had taken over second spot. Al Baker, #13 and also a member of the Checkers, was running well up in the bunch until he got a flat tire. On the second lap, Patrick s till held the lead and had already added a fewmor e min utes over the s econd man. T ,e hea t wasn 't too bad as there were clouds over the sun , but everyone was getting tired and the course was pretty well s liced up. The two miles of California-style sandwash and the five-mile stralghtfir e road were really welcome to the ti red r iders. Patrick pulled In for the win with an eleven- minute leadl Mortens en was s econd on the Triumph, to prove that the big twins can still do the job in the des er t over the lightweights. Ca s ey Folk, #43x, an Amateur from Vegas , pull ed in third on a Husky to take first lightweight. Terry Tracy, #113x, on a Greeves , moved up from 10th on the firstloop to fourth overall and second lightweight. Bill Johnson, #149, was sixth In and took firstOpenAmateur on a Triumph. J. Roberts, #309 on a Husky, pulled In for first 250 Novice and twelfth overall. Ernle Nogosek, #507 on a Triumph, had bad luck at the tables on the strip Saturday nlght, but made out real well Sunday by picking up first Open Novice and sixteenth overall. Jim Sumners, #578, came over the hill in the Number One spot, with Frank Morgan, #1, In second, and Ron Burpo, #111 In third; Laurence Mulock, #60, was running fourth and all were on Hodakas.
