By Maureen Lee Photos by John Shedd GARDENA, Calli., July 6 - Continuing on througb his second highly successful season, Skip Van Leeuwen again led 'em home at the monthly TT Steeplechase at Ascot Park. Skip won his heat, first Expert one of the evening, after passing Ji m Berry and Eddie Mulder and went on to win the Main wi thou t any serious challenge. Clyde Lltch (T riumph) Dallas Baker (BSA ) and Northern rider Mark Wllllams (Triumph) had someactiongoingbetween them In the early laps before settling down to even spacing, with Bak er finally going out wi th mechanical problems and Williams endi ng up fourth overall and Paul Bos trom third. Dusty Coppage held down second spot fo r a long time with Eddie Mulder chasing him unill Coppage 's machine started giving out and Mulder passed Into the second spot before Coppage was fo rced out completely. Novice Main to Mashburn The Novice Maln started with Dave Hansen (Kawasaki) in the lead and David Aldana, Steve Bast and Kei th Mashburn following. There was a bit of a bunchup at the .start or the esses and Mashburn got through to take over the top spot with Aldana right on his tail but although Aldana tried he couldn' t catch up and pass the fast Yamaha of Mashburn'S. Steve Bas t took third with Ron T ayl or ( Yamaha) f ourth . Novice Trophy Dash winner was Dave Hansen and Dusty Coppage took the Expert wi th Skip Van Leeuwen behind him with all stops pulled. Early Expert heat race leader, #391 J im Berry, I s chased aver the j ump by #12 Eddie Mul der and wlnnln gesl TT·er 01 them all - #59 Skip Van Leeuwen. Rice Reaps Amateur Reward Ben Fakkeldy got the l ead spot in the Amateur Main but it wasn't long before hard charging Jim Rice (BSA) got by him on the halfmlle turn with Butch Turner (Triumph) taking over the second not long arter by goi ng in deeper on turn one. More excitement was gener ated when both Norm Elledge and Dave Smith passed Fakkeldy and led f or a while only to be re-passed back by Fakkeldy who was determined to fi ni sh not less than third, Airborne Harley sldehackers, pilat Doug Bi ngham and passenger Ed Wade, took 3wheel race. #124 Dave Hansen wan Novice Tr ophy Dash, briefly led l inal. Dave Aldana (115) heads Dash runnerup Greg Hodges (216) and eventual winner Mashburn. Three-Wheel ers Too The Sidehacks had their usual wi ld and wooly Main to keep the crowd more than entertained. The Harley or Roes ch and Rldyard got away first with Johnson VanLaar second and Hum mer-Gulbransen third. Roescb -Rldyard and Hum merGulbransen had a real drag race down the straight wi th Hum mer the winne r , and the n the eventual winning team, a Har l eyDavi dson wi th Doug Bingham the pilot and Ed Wade the pas senger , got by Roesch and r eally went after that firs t place post tt on, The y were the only hack actuall y j umpi ng th e j ump and they over took the leaders on the lake turn. The next TT will be fi r st sa turday nigbt in August and everyone's al r eady predicted what the headiJne for that one will be . same as this one. (Results on page 20)
