HAWLEY HAULS IN CLASS A COMEBACK make a position in the Mains . Br uce won it, but it was the opinion of the officials that Don was denied his waiting period s o the race was re- run with the exception of Haserot, who had already earned hims elf a position in the A Main. In the re- run, Don showed that sliding is an art in its elf as he did a terrific job of backing lUs JAP into the corner s and keeping it crossed up for practically the entire race, out-dis tanclng Jon Thomas and J ohn Hate ley , The semis were made a little more exciling this week as they wer e inverted starts. Hawley ha s been competi ng succe ss fully In sprint cars , but the lure of the spee dway brought him back to bikes. By Mike Capali te Pho tos by Dennis Greene PACOIMA, caur., July 6- The Whiteman Stadium oval was agai n the sc ene of so me very fast and excitingClassA shor t track racing as the 500cc speedway machi nes had their third Saturday night go- around of the season. Despite the monthiy As cot TT race, the stands were filled with eage r fans waiting for the thirty or so riders to do battle. As one spectator put it, "You can see more action in one fourlap JAP race than you can in a whole night of TT racing." To make for even more thrilling ac tion , it was decided to time the semimains arid put the riders in the Mains not only in an inver ted start, but to handicap the faste r riders as well. This pro ved to be an excellent innovation as the faster riders had to get through the pack and to see two riders all crossed up with one passing the other on the outs ide is enough to make Whistler 's mother s tand up and cheer . The C Main was a three- way battle bet ween Thomas, Tanne r and John Carte r , with Nutte r in four th but unable to move up close enough to be a threa t. Thomas took the lea d with Tanner hot on his heels and Carter r ight behind him . Despite Sammy' s hard r iding and sli ding, he had to s ettle for a second behind Thomas. It seems as the Mains progress, the action gets faster and fas ter and the B Main proved this out as it pitted Scott, Woods, Hatele y and Conserrier e . It was a battle royale between Steve and Rick When, suddenly, up cam e young J ohn. He got Woods on the insi de and rrom then on it was a Scott -Hateley battle with Woods hanging right in there for a third as Scott took the win. .., fl odaka \ IOlo re.n :ll' s Gteeves Mont esa Kawasaki W estminister Sport Cycle Guy R. The sixth hea t had the cr owd on its feet as Don Hawley was out for the fir s t ti me since the r evival of speedway r acing, and showing beautiful form . Right behin d him and matching him slide for slide was John Hateley, an alternate for Stu Morley who couldn't get his JAP to fir e on the li ne. As Don and John kept up their sliding exhibition, this left Sonny Nulter and J im Ashworth farther behind, but the outcome was obvious as Hawley was using all the tricks learned in many years of speedway racing both here in the United States and overseas. Hawley ca me back in the Trophy Dash to again s how the boys how it's done, and try as he might, 0' Brien couldn't get around him . Tanner took third with Scott fourth. The semi-mains went off with the usual br eath-taking displays of full-lock sliding but in the four th s emi, as Hawley prepared to go onto the track, his pit cr ew noticed a loose fr ont axle . Their frantic motions to the starter were mistaken for an indica tion of a s cratched entry so Bruce Haserot was moved into his s lot and before the Pit Steward could get to the line, the race was away with Bruce leading. So with one lap down, Don blasted onto the track anyhow, to try and CI) t.J Ta nner, Bruce Battl e The fir s t heat pitted for mer Asc ot r ival s Sammy Tanner and Blaclde Bruce along with Al Holley and Keith Kruser. Blaclde had hung up his steel shoe for good until he was a spectator last week: then he said it looked like so much fun, it would be wor th coming out of r etirement for. What he hadn't reckoned with was the fact that Samm y had two weeks of previous racing going for him so that although Blacld e was side by side with Samm y going through the cor ner s in fulllock slides, Sammy was getting belter drives down the chute s and Bruce had to settle for a second with Kruser third and Hclley four th. The second heat put two top shorttrackers together - Rick Woods and Lee Stumpenhaus - who had a terrific go at it with Woods crossing it up so wildly in the corners that Lee couldn 't find a way around him . The third hea t was a hearts topper as crowd -favorite John Hateley .md Bruce Haserot tangled in the cor ner , but despite doing endo's, both men and machines wer e okay and able to get back into the prog ram by qua11fying as alternate s. Chuck Ber r y was accredited the win on the black flag. The fourth heat was unique in the fact that it cons isted of five men, but after three laps, only Steve Scott and Paul Conserriere were still running and as Steve took the checkered flag, he also took the fastest heat of the evening.
