RAYMOND AND ELLIS STORM AT SOUTH GATE By Mi ke Ca pallte It l ooks like Jimmy Raymond Is going to be the big Trojan Race way short track threat In the 100cc class on his Suz uki as he I s stormi ng the South Gate , Calif. oval I n far better times than he ever did on his Honda. This I s not to say tha t Paul Wilde i s to be co unted out on his Yam aha; i n fact, the duel between these two r iders I s becomi ng the season' s top crowd-pleaser , Paul and Jimmy both won their r espective heats on Wed., June 5 so their fir s t encounter of the eveni ng was In the Trophy Dash and Paul got the jump off the line and although Jimmy was giving It everything he had and doing some beautiful riding, he co uldn't make It In only three laps, so Paul took the checkered flag f or the Dash win. Raymond Romps As their heat race win s put the m both In the 100cc Main Even t , the pit wall was lined with racers and pit men, all anxious to see the outcome of the 10lap m ain, When the flag was dropped, a very unusual thing happened. Wilde di d not get his usual jackrabbl t start, and this I s defi nitely unusual, since one of his main attributes Is his fantas tic ability to charge off the line and be the first man I nto the cor ner which Is an advantage both physclally and mentally. This left the lead to Raymond on the Suzuki, and it was plain to see that he was determined to make up for his loss In the Trophy !)lsh as he sta yed In f r ont of a hard-charging Wilde all the way to the chec kered flag. Third place went to Paul Shaurer who~:Was out for the fir st tim e this year on a Y maha. F ourth place was Chris Smith on a Kawasaki while Dan Hazel ( Yamaha) copped fifth . The big battle i n the 250cc class has been the ' duel betwee n Randy Ellis on his Honda and Lee Stum penhaus on the Bultaco, but I t was felt that th e 250cc events would be rather anti-climatic wi th Lee gone on vacation. The fans were In f or a surpr lstng treat, however, as one of the top threats f rom last year made an appearance In the lineup. 11I1s was Stan Rogers on a Bultaco, who let Ellis know In the heat race that he would not be removing a certain kind of fruit from a certain kind of tree whi ch Is not supposed to be men tioned In co-educational reading matter. In the T r ophy Dash, It was Carr oll Skov on his Bultaco who read the starter and got the jump off the line, and In three laps, neither Randy nor Stan were able to get around smoothriding Carroll, who took his first Trophy Dash wi n of the season. - Four Way Go 11I1s built up the excitement for the 250cc Main as I t seemed that everybody was r iding a little harder than usual and when the seven-man final roared off the line I t turned I nto a fo ur- way battle be- ~ twee n Ellis, Roger s, Skov and another Cl> rider out for the first time this season , ~ .M i ke Boa! on a Bultaco. After much c.. lead-swapping be tween the f our of them I t was Randy Ellis and his fantastl~ .~ corner-sliding ability on his Honda who 0> cam e out on top, followed across the ... line by Rogers, Skov, and Mike Boa! all -: aboard Bultacos, F1!th place went to ';:, Ronald LaMastus on a Yamaha while:; Loyal Walker, ( Bultac o) took sixth. ...
