The Mammoth M.C . ol Mammoth,
Calltorn1a threw their first AMA motocross under near-perfect conditions and
wbat bad to be the tinest scenic setting
tor a motorcycle track In the country.
Although Mammoth club members had no
real experience in laying out a motocross track, it turned out io be one at
the best In the country (In this reporter-s
opinion).
Snow-patched H1gb Sierra countryside
greeted the early risers to this two -day
event. A late snow kept the ground damp
and trackable whi l e adding to the tantastic beauty olthe countryside.
Action got underway with the tirst
moto tor the 0- 100cc class taking ott
at approxi mately 12:00 noon . Bultacomounte d Bob Thure and Hodaka jockey
Kevin Hill reached the tirst turn at the
top ol the hill ahead at the pack. Bill
Pettigrew and a Steen Hodaka teamed lIP
to catch the tront runner and take the
number one spot in the first maio. The
second and third motos were about the
same with Pettigrew taking both and
Thure copping a second.
The 250cc Experts included two southBishop, California Pack Sialion owner Ba be
land greats In moto-cross . Preston Petty
Jay Is back and In Ireal form. Babe was #l
and Ron Nelson, and the battle that deIn the soutftland deserl back In 1957-58. Now

Preston and Suzuki hot on their tau. The
last moto was Preston all the way. Afler
moto; 300 ·pts. tor second; 200 pts, for
the points were tallied lIP, Ronnie had
third; 100 pts, tor fourth and after three
1100 points and Preston 1000. The pointsmotos the points are added lIP tor each
scoring is this: 400 pts. for first In each
competitor.
Monles....ounled Ron Nelson (11114) picks his way throulh mudhole ahead of Preston Petty (#8
Suzuki) and on to first place brass In 250CC Expert.
