Last year tflis section hadn·t been too bard. but tflis year It was a real bMr. There was one particular uphill tbat really wiped out the riders. At a secret check, Just before the Wagon Wbeel gas stop, the first six riders lbat checked in were close together, but over fifty were rllllD1ng late at tills time. It was the bardest section of the run. It this can be judged by the number that dldn·t make It through. The course continued east across the desert floor and the mountain tops, crossing Government Peak and then to Johannesburg for a IS-minute break. Leaving Johannesburg. thetrekcoot1nued north to Ridgecrest and a good night's sleep for weary riders. The first day's toll on man and machine was heavy. Less than 100 riders came through the last check. ThIs meant over 75% were now out of contention. Sunday had a few one day entries, and these along with some overnlgbt repair jobs, pushed the start up to over 100 riders. The course snaked over the mountains, through the canyons and across the flat desert east and south of Ridgecrest. before stopping for noon check at Red Mountain. After Red Mountain, It was open desert almost all the way to Four Corners with the temperature around 110 degrees. Thepath from Four Corners was a duPlfcate of the first section saturday except for a short loOp near HI Vista. Shortly after 4:30 p.m•• riders began arriving at the f1nIsh at Pearblossom. A handful of tired, happy riders made It the entire 435.2 miles, and the rest knew they'd make It all the way next year.
