Cl ub members Al Finan and John Apple had worked for three days with blades, rollers and sprinkl er wagons to get the course In perfect condi tion. Th eir effor ts were not wasted and the track was almost like an as phalt pavement. In practice laps, the riders l ooked more like r oad racers than TT riders . Some old hands estimated the speed of the big machines at over 90 mph on the grandstand strai ght . With both Don Matthe ws and his " Mike' s Speed T uning" BSA Gold Star on th e di sabl ed list, I t l ooked like a battle between ' Myron Carter and AI Finan for the Open Exper t money. The firs t mo ta lived up to expec tations wi th Finan and Carter putting on a hub-tohub duel with Carter narrowly beating out F i nan at the wi re . On the next to last lap of the second mota, Finan was l eadIng Carte r by about a length going Into the switch-back when his f r ont wheel lost i ts gr i p and the ma chine nIpped. Bultaco rider Dave Stauffer (age 13) captured th ird. It I s i nt eresting to note tha t the firs t five fi ni shers i n this class were all under 16 years of age. Th e lOOcc Expe r t motos saw Jim Mc Gulre r epeat his wi nning ways on his Van T ech Hodaka, with neve r a serious threat f rom Yamaha pilot Jim Harmon or Hodaka-mounted Wayne Hosaka, who finished 2-3 . The 200cc Matos found 15year-old, tow -headed Tim Leque dominating the program . Eddie Murle gave an Impressive ride but his skillful efforts were not quite enough to overtake Leque; Bob Richardson finished third. Vanderpool's 350cc Yamaha was better suited to the situation and he dominated the 500cc Nov ice motos from start to finlsh. Louis Williams on a Honda, and Matchless- mounted Merrill Nelson followed him acr oss the finish line. Triumph riders swept the field In the Open Novice program with hard-ri ding John Hoy shading Lance Vallery at th e flnlsh and Wayne Butterfield r iding to an I mpr essiv e third. Vic Hanan who has repeatedly pushed his Yamaha to victory In the 250cc Novice class of late did It again, victimizing 2nd and 3rd plac e Kawasaki riders Wayne Clarke and Cllff Williams.
