F iguerpa Torrance, calif om ia au) U.12C2 story and P holDs by To m Cu lp Sunday, Aprll21, 1968 was the openi ng go on the newest TT scrambles course in Southern caliIornia as the Orange County M.C. chose to give the big bore r iders the r iding man y had been yelling for, but not many choose to support. Those who supported the OCMC In this effort to give the beavywelgbtsan opportunity to ride in the dayllgbt and get plenty of laps win JlgI"ee'this Is what they got for tbeir money. Upon arriving at Saddleback Pal"k , all we could see were orange windbreaker s with Orange County M.C. on the back.. They were all over the place. Here Is a club with plenty of manpower to put on a good day's event, and that's just what they did. As time grew near to start the Experts, the tact tbat the turnout was not up to '. par was In every club members' mind, so the y got togetber and turned the r iders out for practice. The question was asked by the starter, .. How long should I let them go?" The referee' s answer? " TIll they get tir ed." That is just what they did! They turned 25 eager Experts loose to try their style on the short new course. After ten or so laps every time they came by they gave the starter funny looks. Eventually practice ended. Scott Storms The first event was the 500 Expert moto with Steve Scott taking the lead in the first corner and never giving It UP. In the later laps Scott and Fishhurn, who had fallen and was a lap behind Scott, had a go at It. The next class to go was the Open Expert moto with J im Peter s on '" Et: to:! ~ to:! ..J U ,... As the laps progressed Jim lost It In the sweeper , putting Cody (Triumph) out In fr ont, but not for long. Bill lost his mount In the s weeper a couple of laps later and by then Pet er son had gotte n UP, moved back Into second, then went on 'to the win. Cody remounted and contin ued, only to tangle with Ben Fakkeldy' s rear wheel while trying to catch Peterson. The second motos were copies of the fi r s t but the third motos proved to be a different story as the fifteen-lap events took their toll of man an d machine . The 500 Expe rt go saw Scott tak e the lead with Fishburn, Ariel mounted, In hot purs uit. As the laps wor e on Scott had electrical proble ms , so Fishburn turned uP second, thi rd was Willingham . The tbll"d moto for the Open Expe r ts saw Peterson winning it wire to wire, but he is a member of the promoting club and was r iding for fun, not much fun for Fakkeldy who took the win with Dorsh i n second. Here Come The Amateurs By tbls ti me the Ama teur s had arrived and were turned loose for practice , and plenty of it. The 500 Amateur moto saw Lenar take the lead never to be pres sed with the battie for second and third between Boyle s an d Evans with Boyle s taking second an d that's the way it ended In al l three motes , The Open Amateur got off with Morart ty on a Trlumph leading and Allen Trio second, Peterson third. Lap after lap rolled on, the riders looking as if they really enjoyed the battle. Now the Novices got their chance at the cour se . First of! was the 350 Novic e mota with Mike Toussu on a super fast Kawasaki getting the jump on the rest of the field with Sandborn (Ducati) In s econd and Currell (Bultac o) In third. The 500 Novice had Patterson ( BSA) charge into the lead with Troats (BSA) foll owing and Potter ( BSA) taking tblrd.1n the Open Novice go Michell grabbed the lead, but he took a s pill In the third mo to, lost out to Kell an d had to s ettle for a hardfoug ht second with Kavanaugh in tblrd. When the day' s events wer e over, the r iders load ed up and hurried home to ge t out the liniment as the re were sure to be s ome sore muscles afterthosel5-lap motes , This is more riding than the heavywei ghts ge t In 2 or 3 races at the regular events. It's too bad that more of the Big Bore r iders dldo't s uppor t his event as the Orange County M.C .puton a r eal good day of racing. ..... :.. u Don & Ray's Motorcycle Shop 1223 W.Ave. I, Lancaster, Calif.
