Th lOOcc Novice r iders, first to really test the well -groomed course, were also the first to use the new lighting system. The green "go" light flashed on and those little screaming machines ripped off the line. Suzuki carried Alex Jorgenson, 38v of Stockton, on through the finals to give him awen-deserved first place. Ron Long, 33j of sacramento, showed what the 100cc Amateur class was all about as he walked away from all his competition to get a first In hIs last race before joining the Coast Guard. He used a little Bridgestone from Rancho Cordova Cycle Sales to push hi m way out In front of the pack. The nexi size class was 200c c, and Kenny Robe rts led all of his events, which gave him fi r st place Amate ur gold. As the bikes got bigger, so did the track. The east . side of the course was re - routed up on the far bank and then brought back by way of a downhUl corner , whicb looked more like a ver ti cal switchbac k. That was the place where some of the riders said that the race was won or lost.
