TROJAN TT AND SHORT TRACK:
HOPKINS TAKES BAILEY
3 WEEKS STRAIGHT
By Mike Capalite
P hotos by Dennis Greene
Hopkins (71) and Bailey go at It.
The Hopkins-Bailey duel going on in
the 100cc Senior T T class is the cau se
of some of the finest racing seen at
South Gate, Calif., but it's beginning to
make the results read like re-runs on
late nigh t TV. For the last three weeks,
Gary Bal ley has won his heat and the
Trophy Dash in the 100cc TT, only to
have Dale Hopkins, al s o Hodaka mounted,
get the jump in the Main Even t and go on
to take the 100cc win. On April 5, It
looked like · there mi ght be a chan ge as
Balley an d Hopkins wer e both in the
Trophy Dash. Hopkins s hot off the line
and into the lead but Ga ry was right
behind him and moyed past. to take the
checker. In the main event, Dale got in
front and s tayed the r e despi te all of
Balley' s efforts to pass, an d that's how
they finished . Placing third on a Honda
sponsored by El Inca racing cams was
§>"
Chuck Saxton. One entry who could possibly have changed the result sh eet was
Steve Scott (Bultaco), but he had igni tion
problems in pr acti ce and had to hang
it up.
.
Scott was r ight there In the 250c c
class, though, winning his heat race and
It was expected that the Trophy DaSh
battle would be between Steve' s Bultaco
and Bailey on the Nic k Nlcholson- spo nsored Greeves. Although Stev e was right
on Gary's r ear wheel all the way, he was
not able to take 1\ awa y fr om him, and
Balley remained undefeated In the 250cc
TT Dash .
The 100cc Jun ior Main was a good one
as new rider Steve McMahan (Yamaha)
took the lead, but Gary McKenzie (Hoda ka) s ta yed right behind him waiting his
chance and when he got it, he took the
lead, holding It all the way to the checkered flag with Steve having to settle for
second . Third place went to Hodakamounted Richard Ray while new rider
Steve Nic hols on a Honda fi nished fourth.
The 250 Main found Steve Scott doing .
a beautiful job of getting through the pack
in the first corner to take the lead, and
he was doing a top -notch job of holding
It although Gary Balley kept his Gr eeves
ri ght behind him for seven laps. 11 was
rather doubtful that Gary co uld ge t by
when suddenly, wi!!, half-a-lap to go,
Balley snookered Scott out of the hairpin coming onto the big tr ack, and went
on to grab the win. Rand y Ellis (Bultaco)
finished third, and Lloyd Quintard, also
Bultaco, took fourth .
In the 100cc Short Tra ck clas s , Paul
Wilde on his special -fra med Yam aha
again pr oved tha t if you want to win, set
up the equipment for the race, as he took
home the firs t place win. Second place
was Gary McKenzie on his Hodaka· tryIng short track for the first tlm~ and
fi nishing thi rd was Dale Hopkin s (Hodaka)
The 250cc Shor t Track Main was
definitely Steve Scott all the way as he
pushed his Bulta co to the win. Second
place went to Bultaco- mounted Randy
Ellrs, Chuck S a x ton (Honda) fi nished
third, and new r ider Alan Turton claimed
fourth on his Bultaco.
