·.. MOTO CLUB LATINO MOTO-CROSS- TT· Story and Photos by Nora and Richa rd Ray On Sunday, March 31, Mexicall, Mexico was the scene of another TT MotoCross organized by the MotoClub Latino. This race WaS a benefit, with all of the proceeds going to Mexicall College. The program got under way at 12 noon with a parade of all the racers and their machines. Then the r acing s tarted with their track was a gr eat honor for the Mexican riders . For the American riders there was a big surprise as well as a great honor when John Rice , So. California's No. 1 s crambles r ider, showe d up to r ide the Open Class. In addition to Camar ena, the 250 class had speedy Roy Spiker amon g the entrants. Still on his 100cc Bridgestone, Spiker easily outran his competition in the first two motes, The third moto was a different story. The little 100 started several feet beWnd the pack to make the race more interesting. In spite of this handicap, man and machin e finished just Inches behind the first place man In this Brldgestone rider Roy Spiker comp letely dominated l OO cc class to take fi rs t place gold. the 50cc class. G. Sanchez won all three motos on his Yamaha, after changing the lead several times with Honda rider Oscar Lujan . Pedro Proseda took third place on another Honda just ahead of J . Rodrigues on a Moto Islo, The 100 class saw three U.S. r iders tlucing the trophies . Roy Spiker on his 100Cc Br idges tone racer won all three motos, but not without a battle. Richard Rayon a Hodaka 100 held the lead tor 4 out ot 5 laps in the tirs tandthird motos, but s till bad to s ettle tor s econd place behind the Brldgestone Kid. Mike Lanphere; al so on a Hodaka, won the third trophy, beating out L. Medina and E. Martinez, who pushed him all the way. The 175 class was s hor t on riders, as only tour machines ot this size showed Yamaha. The tie was br oken with a 5la p ma tch race. Lay held the lead for the entire first lap, but was passed when his Bul ran out of petrol. He then had to settle for fourth, with Ruben Avila on an Ossa taking fifth . The first Open Class moto started with a bang. Halfway through the first lap John Rice on his quick Honda and Ricky Williams from Yuma on a BSA Goldstar collided. The race was halted while fr iends removed John R' s leg from between the rear fender and tire of the BSA. Fortunately, there were no injuries to either man or .machine. The first completed Open Class moto found Williams coming out on top, with Rice in second and Camarena on his Kawasaki in third. Rice change d the rear tire and the gearing on his bike before the combined second and third moto, which was a lenlap r ace. It paid off well, as he took the lead at the start and held it all the way. This gave .. El Diablo," as the Mexican People call John R. ,thefirstplacetrophy in this clas s . Second place went to Eicky W1lllams, whose smooth riding held champio n Ca marena back In third. The tr ophies were awar ded at the trac k by Benny Sanc hez and tour lovely trophy gir ls from Mexicali College . The Overall Point Tr ophy was won by Roy Spiker for the second ti me In a row. Following the presen tation, there was t ree tood and drink for everyone . So, In order to make it a better race, tour ot the 100 class riders signed up tor the larger class , too. The winner ot all thr ee motes, L. Medina on a Kawasaki 175, was never challenged . The r ace was tor second plac e, with Tom Lay on a Bultaco Sherpa edging out R. Rayon a Hodaka to give Lay second and Ray third. Another small bike rider, Mike Lanpher e on a Hodaka, took fourth. The next two clas ses contributed a great part of the day' s excitement. Entered In the 250 class was the No. 1 Mexican rider trom Guadalajara, Ildelfonso Camarena.
