The event was a 5O-m\Je scrambles, with riders maJd.ng fifteen laps over 3.6 mUes of rugged Enc1n1tas countryside. All EJrP8rt classes competed In the first race. whlch started at 10 a.m.. and all the Novices had their chance two hours later. The Sage Hoppers used the1r nojumping-the-gun-start. whlch has the riders straddling their front wheelswith the engines dead and looldng back over their bikes at the tlagman. Sloce restarts can present a problem In a race of this type, thls method Works quite well. As Bob Good1ng' sflag streaked through the warm alr, a pair of Greeves r iders. named Balleyand Petty roared away from the Une struggling for the lead. and the open class was under way . several seconds later, the 250CC jockeys were off with Lars Larson pul1lng lnto the lead on the first lap. Trall bikes came out next and Hodaka r ider Jack Morgan screamed away in the lead pursuing the bigger bikes . The Powder Puffs also ran with the experts since It was felt that It was safer than haVing them run w:Iththe large mob of DOVlces. DIstr1ct 38's #1 plate holder, Gene Fetty. moved out loto the lead with GarY Bailey playing chase. Fetty held 111m df for almost two laps, but persistent Gary s queezed by and took over the lead. Lars Larson andhts Husky_re rea1ly doing the deed back lo the pack. He completely ran away from the 250 class and began plcld.ng oft the bigger machines. After leaving about 20 m1les of dirt behlnd, Larson pulled lotO thlrd ove rall beh1nd Balley and Fetty. who were way out In front of the packandreallymaldng a race of it. Larson's th1rd position was short lived, as be soon dusted oft the two Greeves riders and stretched out a big. big lead. Jack Morgan left all the other trail bikes beblod and picked bis way through a pack of bikes over twice the size of hts m.1gbty Hodaka. Despite clutch d1ff1culties be managed to work hts ' way up to 13th overall before retiring w:Ith the clutch completely wasted. It was Larson who was first to take the checker on hts 250Cc Husky. Balley ran out of gas 00 the 13th lap and Fetty pulled by to take the Open Class wln and second overall.
