The fas t action of the day was seen in the 650cc r ace , as the first three f lnishers ran a closely matcbed r ace. Gene Conant and l ocal f avorite Bob Fortino exchanged the l ead several times durtne the first two laps, but Conant managed to grab fi r s t place. Then Bud Kneass mov ed up to challenge F ortino, an d they exchanged places several times. The outcome was deci ded wilen Bud charged past Fortino on the last lap and held second place to the finish; Fortino followed with a third. Warm weathe r, clear skies, and an extremely fast, dusty track , greeted the 175 or m or e entri es on hand to race at Hollister, Calif. The track consi ste d of tw o l ong straightaways, where speeds ex ceeded 50 mp h, a large swe eper , two tight l ef t hand turns, and a radical r i ght hand turn. The sur face of the track was like glass, and even r epeated soakings could not I mpr ov e traction or keep the dus t down . During practice, the heat r aces, and I n the Main Events, r iders seemed to be dr opping like fl l e s off the slippery cours e . The 90cc Main was once again won by Alex Jor genson on a super f ast de- tuned Kawasaki . Th is was his f ourth straight win I n a row, and that's pretty good' for a small 13-year- old kid. I n th e heavywei ght class , the Wymer Brothers, Willis and Richard duplicated their wins at Holllster, Ri ch taking the 500cc Amateur win on a BSA , and Willis winn i ng the 350cc Novice class also on BSA. fOR INEXPENSIVE 24 ....
