The Stumpjumper s, a br a nd new Dis trict club thr ew their first even t Sunday, a scrambles at Elsinore an d it was terrific ! Thes e guys r eally wor ked hard, their pos ters were nea t, pri nted the same as thei r club colors , they got their paperwork done well and had enough wor ke rs on hand to man all posi tio ns proper ly . All this from a club where the major it y of members are moto -cross riders and not scram ble r s at all. Cheers, guys! Afte r the heavy morning fog had cle a r ed, pr ac tice s ta r ted and the surfac e was bltchin! Jusi like night time El sinore an d It kept that way for quit e a share of the morning until the su n really got to work, then thi ngs got a little skittery as did s ome of the riders! Ste ve Nicholl s took the 50cc class and then went on to a second In the 100 Expe rt Moto, which developed into a tan gle with Fr ed Edwards an d ' Ken Lee, both on Yamahas but with Edwards e merging the winner. The Powder Puff class put on a good race, with Kell y Struble (Hodaka) taking three stralght and first woman Expe r t Eulene Long (Honda ) the second place . The gals, since al l rider classifications ride together , line up the Novic es In the front and the othe rs In the second r ow to mak e for more Inte resting raci ng. The Ama teu rs and Expe r ts now have to work a li ttle harder and it gives the Novic es a better chance for glory if they can hold on to any lead they may ge t off the li ne. There Is a protest lodged In the 100 Ama teur class against winner , Hondamounted Gary Scott by the team manning the s econd place scooter, a Brldgestone r idden by Linu s Beall, so r esults of tha t one are pending the official measuring of the engine. The Bast Racing Team clo bbered them in the 125-1 75 class and the 200 class with Ste ve Bast taking honor s In the first and Mike the 200 win. Up Into the 250 class, Ted Longwlth on a Gr eeves really hauled but It was a 'Taco with Eric Oleson aboard that won the Ama te ur division. Only four Experts made it for the ir class , and It was a good race. Keith Mashburn (Ya maha) made one moto but didn't make Itaround a turn once, and then It was Into the tires for Keith. That left Larry Taylor ( purSang) Jim Connoll y (ossa) and Gary Bailey (Gr eeve s) to ftg ht It out , and a fight it was with Gary eme rging on top. The y had to co mbine the 21" and 500 Amateurs for lack of riders but it v.. s a Fred Edwards (BSA) the winne r with a 21 - Inch ride r . Things got a little r ough mor e than once In the ba ck side of the course and although the Novices mig ht have fallen more often the y showed more caution! Ji m Foxe (Triumph) won with BSA ride r Bill Noble in s econd. Once aga in for la ck of riders the last two classes had to double up an d the 500' s and Open boys mixed it up. John Rice (Honda) won his heat but It was Chuck Mlner t on his BSA Victor who won the Main with Joh n se cond. John Kato ( Vic tor ) held on to thi rd and Terry Dorsch (Tri umph), firs t Open rider, the fourth spot.
