Par ker did again win the Trophy Dash, keeping his season r ecord intact as he has yet to l os e a Dash but that was it, as he never got out of a heat race the remainder of the night . Wailing Di ck Donaca was on for m , wi nning his heat and his semi during the scratch events, then com ing on strong to top Ed Richardson and T. L. Hoglan i n th e Main. It was almost the same in the handicap races but " Hoppie" Hodson had other i deas and wanted back i n the win spotlight again so put tt on-em when it counted i n the fi nal, bes ting Donaca, G. Papa. and J. Gordon. At this time it is a job at which even Solomon couldn't al ways be right . Our hats must be off to Pappy and Chuck Guluizzo for thei r sincere efforts . Other than missi ng the leader a few times with th e yellow and checker, Pappy did a very good job. In the Novi ce event 35 r i ders signed in and ran si x five-lap heat races. Jerry Clark from Alameda r iding the Calif. Kart 175 Bridgestone set a new 5-lap track record of 41.73 seconds. He went on to win the Novice Trophy Dash. The Ascot TT opening caused a shortage of riders on Feb ruary 3, but those present put on a very good racing program . Three-tim e win ner Mike Yarn was present and held off all attempts to dethrone him . Mike ma de It fou r out of four and was lapping riders by the fourth lap. Russ Powell who took seco nd was still on the back straight when Mike took the check er . Mike also won his heat race and the T r ophy Dash. The AmateurExpert semi saw a l ot of action with the r iders tr ying to get into th e Main. The r ace was restar ted two times and each time Scott Wilson was In th e middle of a big pile-up. T om Steele f rom Santa Rosa was unable to make th e Exper t Main Event, but he di d set a new 5- I ap r ecord fo r the lightweight bikes I n his heat race. T om f inished second In the Lightweight Main with Harol d Raggio of San F r ancisco leading th e di stance. Novice Jerry Clark still had the 175 Bridgestone red hot and set anoth er new 5- lap record, re p e a ti n g his r ecor d br eaking run i n San Jose th e night before. Don Castro was headed to Ascot when he realized that he'd left his card with th e San Jose officials . He and his erew made a fast trip to Santa Rosa from Hollister and Don entered the evening race to safeguard his le adi ng point standings. Don won his heat r ace and qualified for th e Tr ophy Dash wi th Jerry Cl ar k, Jay Kanemoto, and Ed Garza jumped Into the l ead of the Dash and when Jay and Don becam e entangled Ed was all alone for the gol d. Rldlnga 175cc Brldgestone against the 250's, Jerry Clark (258z) of A lameda gets the ehecker from PaPllY Ford to win the Novice Trophy Dash at San Jose. In his heat raee he set a new 5·1 ap record, and repeated the' feat at Santa Rosa the follow ing night, also winning the Main Event wire to wire. Jerr y Clark did som e f r antic work trying to cur e th e plug oiling condition of the Bridgestone and things l ooked doubtful at th e start of the Novice Main. The Bric' .gestone did co me to life off the line, however , and Jerry led the Main all the way. When the chec ker came he was about to lap Trophy Dash wi nner Ed Garza. Don Castro placed sec ond and was declared Santa Rosa point l eader for the year . Jerry finished secon d In points with Jay Kanemoto close behind. Don c as tro, Jay Kanemoto and Jerry Cl ark all have a common karting ba ck gr ound and are three young men that will bear watching as they progress In the i r Novice year. All three have th e skill and det ermination to be winners i n anything they r ac e. Each ar e backed by wellknown two - st roke b u ll d e r s ; Don by George Hall of Gilroy, Jay by his cousin Irv i n Kanemoto of San Jose, and Jerry by Bob Stout (C alif. Kart) i n San Jose.
