• EUROPEAN SCRAMBLES AT ENCINITAS Siory by BIll Pettigrew Photos by Bill Pe ttigrew and BlII Barron Bright, sunny weather gr eeted 122 riders to the Sage-Hoppers M.C. second annual "Rat Race" near Encinitas, California. Keyed to the beautl!ul weather was the excellent track layout for this annual event on Feb. 4, 1968. 56 Entries in lOOcc Husky-mounted J ohn Kl m on Ira_ses slippery upblll secllon on back of course, and on to Open Elpert win. The day's raci ng activities were divided Into three separate one hour races . Novice and Expert r iders In the 10lJcc class , 250cc to open Novice, and f inally 25lJcc to Open Expert/Amateur. Atter a good long practice the activities started o!! with l OOcc Expert Jack Morgan taking first in his class astride his trusty Hodaka. Although Jack captured a comfortable wiD at the end of the race It wasn't so at the start as the lead changed several times . Ray Vanderpool snatched second Expert on a Yamaha. Leading the Novices around the course was Paul Vandenberg on a hot 11 ttle Hodaka, Tom Rapp and Jack Olnnenberg, also on Hodakas, placed second and third in that order. Tom Clark followed up with a well ridden fo urth aboard a Yamaha . Carol GoodIng copped !irst Powder Putf to trophy with her Hodaka. Tom Muto sporting number 71x snatched first 250cc Novice aboard a hard ridden Greeves. Brad Brown'S Husky did him proud as he captured a good second. Ken Jenner popped up with a third in the bag astride a 238cc Kawa- Gene Felt y (1) making a very determin ed ef· Iort to cop second Open Elpe rt aboard hi s GrH ves 360. Open Novice winner #100 Art Brookman (Tri. umph) opening It up on long grasS)' secll on In front of starti ng area. saki. Novice lOOcc ri der Dean Pett i grew negoUates light secti on of the course aboard a Hodaka. Open Novice ace Art Brookman brought In !lrst place honors on his Triumph. James Hja1marson and Matchless teamed up to cop second. Harry Backer provided action in the Exper t 250cc class as he n ew to an easy victory on a CZ. L.E. Slaughter followed up for second astri de his Greeves . John Kinnon just about bl ew everyone else otf the track as he diced wi th Gene F etty fo r firs t place in the Open Expe rt class. John sporte d a clean new Husky, whil e Gene cam e In aboard a Greeves with the number one on his plate. All i n all It was a beautl!ul day for racin g with help f rom the weather and good layout and management by the $age- Hopper s M.C .
