At this point, Gaetz and Mike Pa trick we r e having at it for tha t second spo t, and Gary Cole, #5x on a 250 Husky was coming on s trong, as was Bill Hmmer, Amateur #34 on a Triumph. Out on the second loop thi ngs started getting rough, especially the s teep, r oc ky hill s. Gae tz, who was now r unning third, dropped his bi ke in a clo ud of dus t on the hill and was so tired tha t he couldn' t pick it up. He let seven riders pass him befo re he could get going again (In the pits, much later, we heard him say, " f'm going to give up s moking or bike sI ca n't do both.") Not long after thi s hill , wild Billy Hammer did a bad thing and bent his front for ks up, but was able to continue. Coming into the fini s h, Bergquist was the winner on t1i 250 Bultaco. Mike e Patrick, fresh fr om two wins in a row, pull ed In second taking first In the open class . Gary Cole, #5x, moved up to thi r d, Al Baker, #13 was fourth, Je ff Fos te r , #16 on a Triumph was fifth, and Bill Hammer, #34 , rode his bent- up Triumph In for sixth sp ot and fi rs t Amateur . It looks like the first Novice In was Tom Muto, #71x on a '250cc machine , taking fifteenth over al l. In the pits after the race, Danny Kline , #7x, see med to sum up the feelings of the r iders when he said, " That was a fast, choppy, ba m-bam cour s e with too man y hoopty- doos." An honorable men tion sh ould go to Ray Alexander, #144x , a Novice on a Bultaco. We unde rstand tha t he dueled 'with Dinny Kline for the last loop and was r eally making it- ending up twentyseventh, just beh ind Kline . Trail Bikes The trail bikes got off to a good start afte r the big bores , with Dean Gold s mith , Amat eur #39 on a Zundapp, leadIng It at the s mo ke bomb . Wes Anderson Jr., #4, Jac k ~rgan , #1, and Frank Morgan , #6, :ilIon Hodakas, wer e hot on hi s trall . Goldsmith ran Into a smal l me chan ical pr oblem whic h only sl owed hi m down te mporarily , but long enoug h to give Jack Morgan the lead , whic h he held an the way to the finish.
