Bert Brundage , who was appointed AMA DIstrict 37 Referee In January of ' 58, has decided to call It quits on the local racing scene tor various busine ss reasons but is expected to remaln COllnec ted with raci ng In other ca pacities that will be announced at a later date. (Se e below .) Over the ten-year span that Brundage guided local raclng the sport has taken many jumps tor the better. He has retereed nearly 500 area race meets during tha t ti me and has watched dozens of r iders from the time they were rank beginners to the most poll s hed Expert. Along the way he has built what ls considered the best crew of officials In cycle racing and the rapid-ftre order or running ort races at Ascot has become the guideline s tor all other events. Dur ing the ten years as Refer ee he has di r ec ted a total of seventeen Nalional YOUNGER SfT Championship events, more than any olber active Referee. . Over the years Bert has mi ssed only two races, ooe due to a death In the !amiJy and another due to AMA business oot or town . It ls a race well remembered by many or the long ti me fans . The mild but fir m mannered Brundage was an Expert profes sional racer tor man y l1luslrious years before becoming Referee and wI1l again lurn to cycl es and get In some long-sought-after trail riding now that time allows .
