HILLTOPPERS SCRAMBLES AT PERRIS • It's tile Open Expert MIllo and Trlumph·mounted winner Ben Fakkeldy (2) leads second place fin isher Terry Dor sch (7). also ri ding a Tr iu mph at the Perri So Call i. track last Sunday. BI g Jim Hunter ( 3) won the combined 350·500cc Expert Moto aboard his B5A Gold Star. Harley ri der Tony Denlus (46) wound up second ahead 01 Bruce Jackso n ( Velo). Story and Photos by M aureen Le e Perris , Calif. (wber e else is there ?) was the scene of the Hilltoppers sc r a mble s Sunday , Jan. 21 and the y ac t ually ma naged to get the who I e progr a m through by dark, which isn't easy thi s time of year! Oniy complaint we heard was from some of the riders in the lightwei ght classes who rode a heat, didn't make the semi and then found out there wasn't a consolation racer $3.25is a lot of money to pay for a three- lap race and we can't blame one rider a bll for the disgusted comment thatfrom now on he's goi ng to ride the desert or one of the tracks open for practice on Sundays rather than waste his tim e and money on noth ing! Pres ton Petty put in an appearance on his beautiful li ttle Suzuki moto-cr oss machine and took the 250 Expe rt class over a host of fast ' Tacos like those ridden by Keith Mas hburn an d Larry Tayl or; John Rice (Honda) made one moto but didn't r e-appear on the startin g lin e for the next two. Pres really flew! Powder Puff winne r was Kelly Str uble (Hodaka) with a win over thi r teen girls. This class is gr owing by leaps and bounds and soon we have a fe eling that ther e will have to be two class lfications in it as there a r e in othe r l oocc classes . There were fourteen 50cc Novice entries and four Expert. The Novi ce winner was Gary Cal dwell on a Honda chased by J im Parker (Yamaha) and brother Ric k for the second an d third place sp ots. umph for Bellflower Triumph) was always close should Bill or the Bee zer goof! J im Hunte r won the 500 class on his BSA Gold Sla r but once again Tony Denius was right ther e in case J im didn' t keep the wick turned on. Tony was on a Harley that at times looked like it handled like a rigid . Ouch! Young F red Edwards , after laking second in th e 100 Expe r t class , hopped on a BSA a nd won the 350- 500cc Amateur Main. You racers want to know how to go fast? F red attributes it to su ckers. A s trawber ry one seemed to do the trick for him Sunday and we' ve promised a whole box to hi m when he wins his first Asco t Main! (Results on page 16) Clo se cornering In the 250 Expert Moto I inds Prest on Petty, the evenlll al winner, on tile pole, #35x Larry T aylo r taki ng the higher groove, and Kei th Mashburn ( 4x) aiming his Bulla co right down the middle. Once again Jimmy Stein (Husqvarna) won th e 250 Ama teur Mai n but a Bullaco with John Garr ish aboard won the 250 Novice . It was ge tting pretty late by the tim e the big boys came to bat but they r an them all in toge ther without ma king the Novi ces walt until the Ama te ur s or Experts had r un (remember when they always did that?). Ducati rider Tom La Fortune took the 350 Novi ce ahead of Ca r old McIntosh ( Honda) who'sa brother of Chuck, Open Expert class rider . Ben Fakkeldy and Terry Dorsch went at it again in the Expe rt Ope n with Ben ending up the winner this week. Right now we'd lik e to give two more pats to shops who keep our racers r a cing . One is La meraux' s in Sunland who helps Terr y Dorsc h al ong an d the othe r is Award Motors in Cos ta Mesa . We' ve probably mentioned Award before beca use they se em to have so man y good racers carrying the colors . La test hots hoe is Blll Noble on a BSA who has been s haki ng up the Open Amateur class, and he turned in a real nea t ride Sunday to win al though Te rry Mor iarty (Tr i- Bob Bai ley, Nati ona l Number 33, began a week 01 camping out and desert rid ing I n lhe 29 Palms area, moved on to the Holiday region, wound up coverin g 400 miles by bike. and took In tile Ponderosa on the way home. off- limits roa d tha t was described at the riders' meeting. Recent r ains left the sand pa; ked hard and relatively dus t- free, allowing the lead ers to do 15-minute la ps , while the enti r e fie ld of 97 Ope n Class r iders an d 80 Trail Class r iders finished the two 10-mil e loops in one hour . At the s moke bomb , Tom Brooks (Bullaco) of the racing Brooks fam il y slipped in behJnd Ron F r y and held onto s econd s pot up through " Give - Up Gulch" and over " Hearthr eak Ridge " bef ore hard- chargi ng Al Bake r (Triumph) could pass hJm. On the second loop, Lynn For tner and hJs Husky moved up to third ahe ad of !l ve - time Ponderosa winner Bill Hutton (T riumph).
